I have a hard time believing that Kaplan would go out on a limb like this unless he has a reputable source (<--god I hate that word) So I ask anybody did Hendry or any "high ranking official" make this statment or is Kaplan trying to jump the story before everybody else?

Kaplan has good inside info. When he hints to something there's usually a reason.

Like the unforeseen circumstances that Cuban may be indicted, tried and sentenced, thus not allowing him to buy the Cubs and expand payroll?

I know it's not relevant. I imagine in order to trade for Peavy and accomplish adding other needs the Cubs may not be able to piece it all together. Or maybe Towers is demanding Samardzilla, and he won't waive his partial no-trade clause - assuming San Diego is on it, which would be really odd.

Confirmed by Bruce he has a full no trade clause not a partial. Yahoo writer corrected his story also.

The Cubs are no longer seeking a trade for Jake Peavy because they completed a deal. Dempster is just a piece , Hendry/Hughes have said they are in all out win it now mode.

Seriously, though, how much would it suck if Cuban was all set as owner and this SEC bs cost us.

It would be like 5 outs to go....

Here is the update on Blackhawks Intermission. This is the quote this time around, "Our David Kaplan is reporting barring unforeseen circumstances, the Cubs are no longer pursuing pitcher Jake Peavy."

I'm pretty sure that doesn't make a lot of sense (the wording). "Barring" seems to mean one thing, while "no longer pursuing" means another. Feel free to discuss.

it means that unless something unforeseen pops up, the cubs are done in the peavy deal

What it means is unless something unexpected happens, the Cubs won't be pursuing Peavy any longer.

Completely different meaning than "due to."

Now it's just a matter of how much you think Dave Kaplan knows.

Seriously guys, Kaplan is a buffoon, he hasn't a clue what he's talking about.

he's a sensationalist hack

Thanks - that helps. :) It seems to make so much sense now!

Unforseen circumstances = "hey wait a minute, that Soriano deal is for 8 years not 4! Crap!" Edited by Soul

Kaplan translated:

Unless the Cubs can get third team involved in the deal , it doesn't look like i will get done.

yeah, i think kaplan is like that slow kid in the neighborhood that your mom always forced you to be nice to and play with despite your angry retorts of rebellious vitriol

Kaplan is clearly a Cubs fan, and I do think he is able to call around and talk to a lot of people about the Cubs, but I get the sense a lot of times that the people he is calling are scouts. Scouts can be a good source for a lot of things, but, in my opinion, probably are not the best source to go regarding trade talks.

Today on Chicago Tribune Live he said he made a couple of calls and was told the Cubs could do either Dempster or Peavy, not both (I'm paraphrasing a bit). I don't know why, but to me it just felt like he was talking to people speculating as opposed to giving him inside information.

They just said it again, and said that the Cubs will now focus on a leadoff bat and a power left RF'er (according to Kaplan I assume).

Interesting - I missed that - was it on the Bulls game?
