Crappy move by Hendry, I guess thats what I hear for defending him earlier today. I guess either we will have less money then we thought we would have, and there wasn't much of a market for Wood.

It sucks but its defensible. We really just don't have the unlimited budget we had in previous offseasons, or at least until we get an owner. Hopefully this owner crap will be resolved sooner rather than later. But at least we have Soriano!

Wood not offered arbitration according to Gordon Whittenmyer

I called this like a month ago. This is horrendous.

Kerry really would do anything to come back, he'd wait til May 1st and sign for the league minimum then!!!!!!!!!!!>

It's not defensible when it's a ~3M difference between Wood and the mediocre closer you acquired for no damn reason.

Well if we didn't have Gregg already on the roster, I would agree. But I still believe that Wood wasn't willing to agree to a one year deal when the Cubs made the trade. It's still a crappy move though, because you could have always traded Gregg again, and there's probably a pretty good chance that Wood still signs elsewhere.

Maybe there's another issue we don't know about. Maybe his arm is messed up. Maybe he was told from higher-ups not to pursue Wood further. Maybe Wood said he wouldn't come back under any circumstances despite statements to the contrary (to save face publicly?)?

If it were as black and white as we're saying, there's no way any GM doesn't offer Wood arbitration.

guess that's that. Time to buy my Kevin Gregg jersey-shirt

buy two; one to piss on and one to cover it up with.

Then Wood would decline arbitration.

Jim Hendry chose Kevin Gregg + whatever middle IF he throws 3M away on to suck for 150 ABs this year over Kerry Wood + a 400,000 piece of crap middle IF.

I haven't heard anything about the Cubs being interested in a crap middle infielder. From everything I heard the rest of our payroll is going towards RF or Jack Peavy. That 3m plus saved on Wood mixed with dumping a chunk of Marquis contract could fit Peavy in our budget. It's a bad move letting Wood go for nothing, but lets not go overboard and overreact. Because I don't see Hendry wasting that 3m on say Mark Loretta or anything like that. The fact that were doing this, and trying to cut back on the bench with letting Blanco go. Shows me that we're cutting back in the pen and bench, so we can improve the line-up or rotation.

If Hendry and Wood have such a great relationship like Hendry says, and Wood and the Cubs left on amiable terms, then why wouldn't Hendry ask Wood to decline arby and help the team out?

Maybe Hendry really wants Wood to make a ton of money so this is his way of making him more attractive.

It's comical that Hendry has allowed it to play out this way. I blame both him and Wood. If they really are such good friends, why couldn't he go to Wood and get his assurance that he would not accept arbitration? If Wood is really the golden boy that everybody makes him out to be, then he'd have no problem telling Hendry he wouldn't accept arbitration and allow the organization to get the much need picks. I can't believe it's actually going down the way it is. Wood, whether intentional or not, just f'd this organization big time.

What an absolute disgrace.

In any decently run organization, Hendry would have been fired long, long ago.

Of course, the Cubs let this pud puller run the show.

Brutal.

*laughs til he cries*

Why? I even specified that it wasn't necessarily his fault. I guess you can't even allude to the fact that Wood might not be a saint without people here flipping out.

That's what I'm saying. This could have played out so much differently.

Why? Because it's utterly nonsensical?

I love this new Wood the saint strawman when much of this thread has been people calling Kerry a liar regarding his willingness to accept a one year contract. Apparently Jim Hendry(who's apparently Kerry's best friend now? When did this nonsense start?) believed he was willing to take a one year contract. That or he's following the Brian Sabean plan of first round picks = bad.

I didn'y even say I was blaming Wood. I said the situation effed us. That said.... could Wood, understandiong the situation and that the picks would be good for the organization, not have gone to Hendry and assured him that he wouldn't accept arbitration no matter what happens? He couldn't have done that? Why not? How could doing that have possibly hurt Wood? Can you answer that? Oh, and why is it nonsense to say that Wood and Hendry are good friends? They've both said on numerous occasions that they are good freinds. Nobody ever said they are "best" friends, and if they did it was obviously hyperbole.

Bottom line is that Wood could have allowed us to get the picks had he gone to hednry. Obviously he didn't. I'm not even criticizing Wood as much as I'm criticizing Hendry...you just get sooo defensive when anyone says something that even suggests something even remotely bad about Wood.

Jim Hendry is everything JeffH has ever said. Who'd want to get compensated for losing free agents? ](*,)
