Checking in on the Mets...

* Tracy Ringolsby says Brian Fuentes' agents proposed a four-year, $44MM deal to the Mets. Ringolsby heard the Indians and Cardinals don't want to go beyond two years. The Mets also met with Francisco Rodriguez's agent.

* The Mets are considering free agent Chad Cordero, who is coming off July shoulder surgery.

* GM Omar Minaya seems willing to spend big money on a closer and one starter, and then fill the other starting spot cheaply. The Mets could, say, sign Derek Lowe and trade for the affordable Edwin Jackson. The Mets haven't exchanged names yet for Jackson.

* Ryan Dempster and Jon Garland may be on the radar, as Minaya met with their agent yesterday. Dempster's agent said he can handle New York.

* Carlos Delgado approached the Mets late in the season about an extension for 2010, but they decided to pass. Delgado wasn't bothered by this.

* Ken Davidoff adds that the Mets have let scout/former Bulls GM Jerry Krause go.

Haha. The Mets giving Dempster a big contract sounds like an absolute disaster. let's hope that happens.

What's more likely to happen? The Mets...

A) Give Ryan Dempster a ridiculous 5 year contract

B) Give Francisco Rodriguez a ridiculous 5 year contract

C) Give both players ridiculous 5 year contracts

I choose C.

Anything over what Hendry has already proposed to Demp is overpaying since Dempster can't hack it in pressure situations. I can't imagine him faring any better in NY with the way things have gone over there the last few seasons. He'd have to be nuts to sign with the Mets.

I was with you right up until there.

Last I recall he couldn't handle 9th inning closer pressure in 2007,

You mean when he saved 28 of 31 opps?

Yeah yeah...that's the year. The one in which he also lost 7 games and had an ERA of 4.73(and a whip of 1.33).

So 6 bad innings of work outweigh 60 innings with a WHIP of .965 and 1.65 ERA? Cause that's what he did in the games he didn't lose.

Both arguments are bad. Almost any mediocre reliever is dominant if you leave out the bottom 10% of their outings. The "clutch" stat on Dempster is a bit selective, and it's a small sample size, so the opposite argument holds no water as well.

It says a lot when the Brewers offer a player $20 million a year for five years. But still, unless Sabathia (a California native who lives in the tony Los Angeles neighborhood of Bel Air) developed a serious addiction to bratwurst, he's not going to sign until the open market establishes his value.

This may not hold true for Ryan Dempster, who is so happy in Chicago that he might sign an extension with the Cubs before Thursday, but the players' union wants top free agents to go the distance in negotiations. That raises the price for other players.

dear brewers,

please give sabathia 100 million dollars.

I know there are gonna be concerns after the way the Brewers used and abused him at the end of this year, but I don't think CC in Milwaukee is something we should be wanting to see for the next several years.

This guy says Demp will take less money and less years if we get Peavy:

Second, although it's been reported that he's asking for five years and $70 million from the Cubs, he has apparently told the team he is willing to give them a discount in terms of money and years to stay with them in the event they acquire Peavy, and help form what would be a beastly starting rotation. From spending a couple of days with the Cubs and Dempster down the stretch, it's pretty clear Chicago's where his heart is, and my guess both sides would make it work.

While I still don't like the idea of re-signing Dempster, I'd live with more money over less years, don't want the Cubs stuck with an expensive 5 yr contract.

Agree. I don't mind having him back, but a large 5 year contract isn't good.

Taking less if we get Peavy is a good sign though.

There is a chance the Cubs will reach an agreement with Dempster before Thursday's deadline. Free agents can only sign with their previous team until then

From Cubs.com

Where did you find this quote, because it's not right. Free agents can still sign with their previous team after the Thursday deadline. It's after the Thursday deadline that they lose exclusive negotiating rights.

You're reading it wrong. It's saying that only the previous team can sign them before the deadline, not that the previous team can't sign them after the deadline.

Really? I've read that second sentence, which appears to be cut off, several times, and it gives the appearance that the Cubs would not be able to negotiate with Dempster after Thursday. I swear I'm not hungover.

It's ambiguously worded and can be interpreted either way.

If it's written like that, it's wrong. They don't even have to offer him arbitration by that point.

It's written so that it's meaning is ambiguous (I'm sure not intentionally, but, still.)

The "only" applies to which team, not when. That is, (before the deadline) the player can sign with only his previous team. After the deadline, the player can sign with any team.

I can see why it could be read in a way that was not meant by the author. I think the word only is misplaced. It would have been more accurate to say, "Free agents can sign only with their previous team until then."

There is a chance the Cubs will reach an agreement with Dempster before Thursday's deadline. Free agents can only sign with their previous team until then, and other teams cannot talk salary with free agents before that date. After that, it's an open market.
