Anyone else hear that the Cubs have offered 3/$36 M to Dempster?

Atlanta Journal-Constitution[/url]"]Braves have also talked to DEMPSTER’s agent, not surprising because I know how much Bobby likes him and Frank Wren has known him since they were both with Marlins. People I talked to seem to think Dempster will go back to Chicago, that he just wants to see what’s out there to make sure he’s not taking a far lesser deal (Cubs offered three years, $36 mill) to stay in Chicago. But he loves it there and he’s likely to re-sign.

justinept27: i could not agree more. The Cubs budget is going to be held in check until new owners come forward.I would try to accomplish lateral salary moves. For instance I would trade Ramirez a constant play off failure with great seasonal stats for Eric Chavez and Houston Street and pay the difference in salary. The Cubs desperately need a L.H. hitter and middle relief.

Even if his postseason stats were a good reason to deal Ramirez (they aren't), Eric Chavez isn't exactly a shining beacon of postseason success. His postseason OPS is lower than A-Ram's.

on the other hand, the person who made that proposal got their user id right when they signed up.

The Blue Jays-Will have money to spend with AJ opting out and he might want to come home. Peavy would be a nice upgrade from Dempster.

Looks like Demp won't be signing anytime soon.

Just met Craig Landis, the representative for free-agent tarting pitchers Ryan Dempster and Jon Garland. They're clearly not the top options for the Mets - that would be Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez - but they'll have to consider them. Landis said he had a brief meeting with the Mets in which they expressed "preliminary" interest in his clients.

"They’re looking at some other things," Landis said of the Mets. "We are. We decided to talk further after the meetings are over, sometime in the next week or two, after the 13th." Open free agency starts on Friday, Nov. 14th.

Dempster put in a terrific year with the Cubs, and the industry speculation was that Dempster and the Cubs would quickly reunite.

"I spoke to the Cubs here," Landis said. "They’re aware that, as of now, there’s very little possibility he’s going to sign soon with the Cubs. That’s what we’re planning as of now."

General manager Jim Hendry indicated Wednesday that Jeff Samardzija could move into the rotation if the Cubs fail to re-sign Ryan Dempster or trade for Jake Peavy.

"It depends on what happens over the winter," Hendry said. "I know he wants to start down the road. And nobody doesn't feel he'd be real good at starting. Next spring we're going to put him in whatever role helps the club the most. There's no way we can determine that on Nov. 5."

thought this was kinda of upsetting...almost making it sound like they won't sign Demp or Trade for Peavy.

To me it sounds like Hendry has a continguency plan IN CASE they don't re-sign Demp or trade for Peavy. It doesn't read they won't, just that they have a plan in place in case neither happens.

Yeah true, but still that contingency plan scares me. I dont want a rotation of Z, Harden, Lily, Marshall, Samarazija

Before getting scared about what the potential rotation looks like, let's see if Hendry "gets his man."

From MLBTR...

11:27am: Chris De Luca says the Cubs are in heavy pursuit of Peavy, partially because of steep contract demands from Ryan Dempster. He's heard Dempster wants five years, $75MM.

If anyone remembers when I said "I bet Dempster will sign for 3 or 4 years at $40-$45 million since he's such a good guy", as well as anyone else who assumed he'd do some sort of hometown discount, now is the time shove it in our collective faces.

I think Dempster's overplaying his hand. You can't fault him for wanting to get the most money possible out of a team(or the Cubs if that's where he really wants to be), but starting pitching is the one thing that there's a decent amount of this offseason. He could wind up Lohsing himself.(at a greater $/year, but still)

I'm wondering if the whole Peavy situation and the reports of him palling around with Towers are just Hendry's way of playing poker. A bluff to lower Dempster's demands with no real possibility of a deal being reached.

The idea that a package of our minor league scrubs and/or question marks at best could get Peavy is sort of mind boggling....but I sure as hell hope it's true.

The Cubs have strengthened their bid to land San Diego's Jake Peavy—one person-in-the-know describing it as a "major push"—who has expressed a desire to pitch in Wrigley Field. And well-placed sources say the Cubs could take both Peavy's $63 million for four years and a higher-than-expected new deal for Ryan Dempster. It now appears the Cubs have upped their initial offer to Dempster to four years instead of three, with the dollar amount believed to be about $50 million, with the hope Dempster will sign before next Thursday when he can talk with other teams. … Atlanta remains the favorite to land Peavy, because, as one top executive claimed, "The Cubs don't have enough [top prospects] to give in return." Young pitcher Kevin Hart might be one to go in the deal. … The Yankees and Angels also believe they're in the Peavy sweepstakes. …

This is the statement I find almost laughable. They say the Cubs don't have "enough top prospects" and yet every report I've seen the Braves are not offering up any of their's so quickly. If they did they could have had Peavy yesterday. So why haven't they? So maybe the scout is speaking out of his butt.

Checking in on the Mets...

* Tracy Ringolsby says Brian Fuentes' agents proposed a four-year, $44MM deal to the Mets. Ringolsby heard the Indians and Cardinals don't want to go beyond two years. The Mets also met with Francisco Rodriguez's agent.

* The Mets are considering free agent Chad Cordero, who is coming off July shoulder surgery.

* GM Omar Minaya seems willing to spend big money on a closer and one starter, and then fill the other starting spot cheaply. The Mets could, say, sign Derek Lowe and trade for the affordable Edwin Jackson. The Mets haven't exchanged names yet for Jackson.

* Ryan Dempster and Jon Garland may be on the radar, as Minaya met with their agent yesterday. Dempster's agent said he can handle New York.

* Carlos Delgado approached the Mets late in the season about an extension for 2010, but they decided to pass. Delgado wasn't bothered by this.

* Ken Davidoff adds that the Mets have let scout/former Bulls GM Jerry Krause go.

Haha. The Mets giving Dempster a big contract sounds like an absolute disaster. let's hope that happens.

Don't be scared - the rotation would be Z, Harden, Lilly, Samardzija, Marquis. Feel better now?

I didn't think so.

Anything over what Hendry has already proposed to Demp is overpaying since Dempster can't hack it in pressure situations. I can't imagine him faring any better in NY with the way things have gone over there the last few seasons. He'd have to be nuts to sign with the Mets.

Last I recall he couldn't handle 9th inning closer pressure in 2007, and he got humiliated at home in Game 1 of the playoffs.

He's proven himself a non clutch performer. I doubt NY is going to save him.

We can pretty much figure out what is going to happen when he is called upon to pitch against the Phillies in a big(and possibly deciding) series next September.
