Unless I'm mistaken, this was the last year of Dempster's contract correct? Do you resign him or not? Put me in the NOT category please. I just have this gut feeling that because of his regular season record, he's going to command too much on the open market and I truly think 2008 was an aberation (sp?). Imho, resigning Dempster to an overpriced contract for too many years is EXACTLY the kind of thing the Cubs have done in the past that has come back to bite them when the player reverts back to their average form.

Let him go and make a push for CC or Burnett.

While on the subject of overvalued players - was 2008 Theriot also an aberation (sp?) or do we see him as our SS at least for the next few years? If not, I seriously look to trade him while his value is at it's peak.

I'm so sick of this organization buying high and selling low - I'd really like to see them try a different approach.

This topic of conversation has been going on for the past couple of months now. I'm pretty sure there's a been several threads about it but I can't find them.

I think most people are in the "re-sign him" camp, as am I. He may command a lot on the open market, but I think he has strong ties to the Cubs and will give them a major hometown discount compared to what will be thrown at him

Unless the hometown discount is enormous, I'd much rather take the picks and move on.

I love Demp, but I'm thinking this year was a fluke. Nothing in his career to this point says he's capable of doing it again.

Seconded, let him walk, let some other team make an expensive multi-year mistake, go after Burnett.

i like burnett, but he's probably as likely to be a multi-year mistake as demptster is

This is very much true. At this point, I'd probably re-sign Dempster. I think he will be pretty affordable. The Cubs potentially lose Harden, Lilly and Marquis after 09. That leaves a rotation and Zambrano and ? The Cubs aren't going to get Sabathia or the like. Even if Dempster isn't as effective as he was this year as a starter, he should still be around league average at worst. Worst case scenario, you have a pitcher with some pretty good success as a short reliever.

No, but it's fun to dream...it's fun to dream.

I think Derek Lowe could be someone that we would have interest in. A groundball pitcher at Wrigley? Count me in.

Derek Lowe is going to get a ton of interest. He's the next best thing to Sabathia. Dempster only has 1 good year as a SP. Burnett has his problems w/ injuries and consistency. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lowe get 60Mil over 4 years. Teams like the Mets, Phillies and Yankees will be all over him. As I don't think any of them are going to be in on Sabathia. I think the Cubs have a better shot at Sabathia than Lowe. If they are willing to pay 18-20Mil/year, I don't think any of the other big spenders are going to be. LA teams and Philly are trying to re-sign Teixeira, Manny, and Burrell respectively. NY teams have a lot of money into their current players and adding $20Mil, even w/ open wallets doesn't seem feasible.

True, but it was a very, very good year that wasn't mostly reliant on luck. I'm not saying he's a sure thing, but it's not like his numbers were really hiding anything fluke-y abut how well he did, like he wasn't constantly getting saved by the defense and such.

use that money for sheets

Sabathia.

just as likely to get hurt IMO. and will cost probably double the amount.

Doesn't Sheets have some sort of muscle tear in his arm? Doesn't sound too good to me.

I'm thinking a trip to Dr. Andrews in in Sheets's future.

you could probably say the same about CC

You could... except you can't, because he's never had any serious injuries or shown signs of injury.

Some pitchers are freaks of nature and can throw 100+ pitches 90% of the year. Sabathia has been doing it for years in Cleveland. Milwaukee really wasn't doing anything different that wasn't already happening in Cleveland, so the whole "The Brewers are ruining his future" argument is stupid. He's a freak.

I'm not so sure about that. He looked terrible in the playoffs, like he had nothing left in the tank.

It's possible the guy won't have arm issues in the future, but I'm leery enough to think that a big dollar multi-year contract would not be the best idea for him.

C.C. seems to hail from the Livan Hernandez school of overused heavy guys. They don't get injured, they just start pitching terribly.
