He bats left is a great two hole hitter and plays RF. I think he has to be on top of the wish list as long as he doesn't demand ridiculous money or length of contract which he very well may do. I would be willing to give him a 3 yr 40 mil to give us a great left handed hitter and make our lineup absolutely ridiculous. Also while he only has 33 at-bats he has produced in the playoffs.

Brian Giles would probably be a better idea. He still plays defense, the Padres need to retool, and apparently thought about not picking up his option IIRC. He's owed $9M next year, was +20 according to +/- in RF, and had the eighth highest EqA in the NL. Probably has 10-5 rights, but that might not be a huge obstacle.

Abreu is younger, but he wants a three year deal and thinks that OF walls can kill you if you get too close. Paying him $40M would be a big mistake.

isnt abreu a total butcher in the of?

giles being so high on the +/- is a surprise

Yes, Abreu was one a great OF. He's pretty crappy now. But if needed, the Cubs have plenty of defensive replacements if necessary (Pie, Johnson, Fukudome).

I thought when trade rumors started to fly around about Brian Giles, he said that he would retire if he was traded. That or he just blocked the deal, I forget.

They had a deal in place to trade him to the Red Sox, but he veto'd it saying he loves living in SoCal

I would take Abreu in a second if he comes relatively cheap. He's left handed can play RF (though it might be bad) and can bat in the 2-6 hole which would help us out a ton. Like someone said it's not like we wouldnt have defensive replacements for him either.

He is a .900+ career OPSer, but hes also 35 years old, and hes going to want a multi year deal, and I doubt he comes cheap. If any mores are made this off season, it should be for a big time impact hitter who can bat in the 3 or 4 spot. At thisn point in his career, he would be a number 5 hitter at this point, and he is not the answer were looking for.

I think that partly correct. I get the impression that if he was going to be dealt to a NON-CALIFORNIA/WEST COAST TEAM that he would threated to retired. Now if the Padres would say to trade him to a team like Arizona/Giants/Dodgers/Angels/A's that kind of team, that would be a different story. I think gloated the rumor of him "possibly retiring" to scare off non-west coast teams from inquiring about him.

Giles had a limited NTC for 07-08 (could block trades to Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, Tampa Bay, Florida, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Washington). I don't see details of a NTC for his 09 option year

Assuming 10/5 rights still exist, this was Giles's 5th full year in SD, meaning he would no longer need a no-trade clause specifically written into his contract in order to still have no-trade rights.

ah yes, I forgot about him getting to that 5th year

But getting back to Abreu, am I the only one who when he sees Bobby Abreu, I see a left handed version of Moises Alou? I mean that's not a bad thing, per se, but both are still good offensive players that are no longer even good defensive players. At this point, I would take Abreu but only as a LFer and slide Soriano over to RF. Outside of that, no thank you on Abreu. Besides, it wouldn't surprise me if Abreu ends up with the Mets.

If we are going to commit long term(3+years) and a decent amount of money(40 mil+) to a new RF'er, I would rather sign Dunn than Abreu. The defense would be close to the same but Dunn will likely produce more for the length of the contract also if we sign him to a 4-5 year deal he could be a replacement at 1B for Lee after his contract goes up in 2 years seeing as we really don't having 1B prospects(Hoffpauir will be 31-32 by then). The defense in RF may be a concern but we got by with Sammy out there, plus we could always use Pie/Johnson/Fuku as a defensive replacement in the late innings. Of available guy via trade/FA for RF my list would probably look like

1.Dunn

2.Giles

3.Ibanez

4.Dejesus

5.Bradley

6.Abreu

No, I don't see much in common with Alou and Abreu. Bobby is a 150+ game player year-in-year-out who turns 35 in January, while Moises was never such a player at that age, and is even more brittle now. You are also talking about a career difference of nearly 40 points of OBP. He also stole 25 and 22 bases the past two years, while Alou stole 3 and 5 at the same age. They are both liabilities in the field, but they aren't that similar.

Milton Bradley anyone?

Way too much of an injury liability. He only played 126 games this year and got 509 PA's and 80% of that came as a DH.

He'd be the Rich Harden of the lineup, no reason this team can't afford such a player.

Soriano, Bradley, Fukudome, Pie, Johnson and the occasional DeRosa would be a perfectly acceptable OF group.

Move Soriano to RF, sign Texeira for LF. Done.

Move Soriano to 2B and Derosa to right. I want nothing to do with Soriano in RF. He's a barely passable as left fielder (read as he's not Adam Dunn or Manny out there)

Soriano can NOT play 2B. Never could. He was epically bad when he was there. There's a reason why the very best offensive 2B in the league doesn't play 2B anymore. His defensive ineptness offset whatever offensive advantage he brought to the position.
