There's no surprise at all that Mike Wuertz didn't make the roster. He's been on Lou Howry list for a long time. This season we just don't know what were going to get from Wuertz from game to game. His ERA is pretty good, but alot of that has to do with either another pitcher cleaning up his mess, or him giving up other pitchers runs. Of course Bob Howry has been even crappier, but Lou is going with a guy who throws strikes and has the track record of being pretty good.

Other veteran relievers have struggled in the regular season in the past, and pitched well in the postseason. So I think Lou is hoping Howry can give the team 3 or 4 weeks of good relief pitching. Who knows maybe Howry can pitch like he did in May/June and be somewhat of a plus in the playoffs. That said I think Mike Wuertz should have made the roster as well. What he did yesturday shows what he's capable of doing when he's on. Of course I wouldn't pitch Wuertz that often, but what he did yesturday makes him more valueable then what Marquis will probably give the team in a five game series.

Right. I think the key for the Cubs' success in the playoffs is getting back to scoring a sick amt. of runs, not scoring 4 when the starter has a high pitch count and then hoping the bullpen will hold it.

My two biggest concerns about the playoffs is the middle relief and the offense. If our starter only gives us 5-6 innings were gonna have to count on either Howry, Samardzija, Marshall or possibly Cotts for a batter. Marmol will probably pitch the 7th and 8th in some games, but depth of his pen is a concern. What happens if we get stuck in a 12 or 13 inning game, do you trust any of those guys? I don't. As for the offense, I know it's different from last season. But just the way it got shut down in the postseason last year, makes me worried that it will happen again.

Guz is looking good early, 4 Ks in the first two innings. Hopefully Howry sucks enormously in the NLDS, but doesn't cost us the series, and Guz, Gaudin, or Wuertz gets the spot instead.

Wuertz showing why he doesn't deserve to be on the postseason roster. Walking Craig freaking Council with the bases loaded? Inexcusable. I'm glad they're leaving him off, I've seen him enough for the year.

I'd rather have Wuertz and take the chance he walks a guy, and know that he doesn't get hit very hard over a guy who's been throwing BP for 6 months.

Gaudin or Wuertz may come in and walk a couple batters, or they may get the Cubs out of a huge jam. Howry, on the other hand, is almost certain to come in and get hit hard. I would much prefer an pitcher who is inconsistently good over a pitcher who is consistently bad.

So Guzman, Gaudin, Cotts, Hart, and Wuertz are pretty much lights out vs. a team fighting for their lives. only 1 of them will be pitching enxt week. Meanwhile 3 runs are allowed, to Sean Marshall, and of course Bob Howry. Care to reconsider your decision Lou?

You don't really think one of those guys should be on the roster instead of Marshall based on just tonight, do you? Marshall should be in before all of those guys. And Wuertz wasn't lights out. He walked Craig freaking Council with the bases loaded to put them ahead.

-Marshall needs to be on the roster if only to give them 2 LHP.

-Wuertz walking Counsell tied the game

-Wuertz may have crap control half the time, but the guy doesn't get hit hard. He gets weak groundballs to SS. Of the possible options for that last pen spot, who would you go with over Wuertz?

Oddly enough, I'd rather have had Howry pitch to Counsell and Wuertz pitch to Braun.

As stats go on the year, Wuertz has been the Cubs fourth best reliever this year by ERA+.
