Yeah, ok. We're gonna have to beat solid teams to get to the World Series. Some people want the easiest path there.

What impact does it have? Setting the Cubs opponent in the first round?

I fear the dodgers far more than the mets. Plus, I DO NOT want to see gallardo, sheets, and sabathia in a possible nlcs

The fact is there's no way to know what matchup really will be better for us and it's a best of 5 crapshoot that we'll be favored in no matter who we play.

The Mets just aren't going to roll over for us if we draw them. Would I rather face them? Probably, but it really doesn't matter all that much.

Avoiding injury is the primary goal of this last week. Nothing else really matters at this point. To think otherwise is to needlessly worry about pointless crap.

Of course, what else would the game thread be without worrying about pointless crap?

Let's see, we could face the red hot Dodgers who have the best pitching in the league, a top offense since getting Manny, and have plenty of time to set their rotation and rest

or

We could play the Mets, their disastrous bullpen (which will probably be even more destroyed with a likely DH on Sunday and potential Monday game), a questionable rotation, and no Santana in game 1

Yeah, no difference.

I tend to agree with you here. In the grand scheme of things a W or L doesn't matter too much... but there are certain elements within the game that I do think are important... getting Sori's stroke back, maybe getting Kosuke a few good ABs... important bullpen outings etc...

But I guess more than anything, I don't want to see any other team celebrate a clinching of any kind at our expense. I don't want to see the Brewers untuck 'em in a clinching situation, just like I don't want to see anyone clinch anything against us in the playoffs.

It's one thing to lose a game... but it's another thing to look silly in doing so... whether the game means anything in the standings or not.

The best pitching of the league? Right. The most overrated pitching in the league, sure.

The Dodgers have spent the last month playing nobody. Two weeks ago, people were begging for the Dodgers to pass the D-backs to play them, and now we're afraid of them? Please. The Dodgers are six games over .500. They are the worst team in the playoffs.

I think it matters a lot. I think the Dodgers are leaps and bounds better than the Mets in pretty much every area. Also Furcal is back. They have a top offense and the best pitching in the league. The Mets have a good lineup and that's it.

Who cares if Sori didn't dive? It's a pointless game for the Cubs. I wouldn't want anyone out there diving at this point.

Soriano had no chance at that ball, but it's far from a pointless game

I disagree, it was quite catchable if Soriano actaully runs rather than jogs to the baseball. I hope its just that he doesnt care about the outcome of the game, I cant understand any other reason for the complete lack of effort on every ball hit his way tonight.

You actually are agreeing with him for a completely different reason. I agree with dexter. If you think winning is important just for the reasons above, I don't agree with you.

Personally, I'd rather see Pittsburgh, San Diego and Atlanta as the other opponents. The Cubs will have to beat good teams in the playoffs.

But if it's a sizeable difference, why not take the worse team?

Yes, the Cubs are far and away the best team in the NL. I actually think the Dodgers are a best-case scenario, and a Dodgers-Brewers NL playoffs would be extra-good. But, whoever they play, they will be favored and a better team.

it amazes me how easily people seem to think the mets will go down next week just because they've looked bad lately.

Remember how bad the White Sox did in the 2005 playoffs after flailing the last month of the season? Oh, wait.

Remember how poorly the Cardinals did in the 2006 playoffs after nearly choking their playoff spot? Oh...

The Cubs weren't going to sweep the Brewers this weekend. If the Mets can't win, it doesn't matter.

Saying that they have the best pitching in the league wasn't an opinion, it was a fact.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?sort=WHIP&split=0&group=8&season=2008&seasonType=2&statType=pitching&type=exp2

So having the best ERA and best WHIP in the league doesn't mean they have the best pitching? Interesting.
