Unless Howry were to single-handedly injure all of our starting position players and all of our key pitchers, is it really possible for him to ruin our season when we've already clinched the division and HFA throughout?

you think he'll be left off the post-season roster?

Maybe if someone else actually stepped up and could get anyone out it would make Lou's decision a bit harder. Other than Wood and Marmol every guy out there has been pretty much a disaster lately.

Wood, Marmol, Marshall, Cotts, Shark, Marquis seem like pretty sure bets for the NLDS. Howry gets left off if they go with an extra bat but I don't see that happening. Assuming they keep the 11th pitcher Howry is up against Guzman and Gaudin and neither really have inspired much confidence.

Just a little side note.

I don't think anyone here believes the plan is for Samardzija, Cotts, Howry and Hart to pitch the 8th, 9th and 10th innings of games. When we consider the circumstances (on the road, vs a desperate team pulling no stops, in a environment that has been less than friendly to Cub pitchers of all calibers) these guys didn't really fare too poorly.

What's more important than their respective performances was that each of them had a playoff atmosphere to be tested under so that the staff can make more informed decisions. I don't think Samrdzja disappointed.

I just hope Chad Gaudin makes the playoff roster. I know he struggled the other night, and has been a little shakey in the two other games he pitched in. But hopefully Lou see's those games as somewhat of rehab games, and If Gaudin can give us a good inning or two this weekend he will be on the roster. Before Gaudin got hurt he was pretty good for us(other then that game against the Nationals were he struggled in a blow out), and gives us another decent option with Samardzija in the 6th and 7th innings. I really don't care if Howry or Marquis make the roster, because if either of those guys are pitching in a big situation in the NLDS we're gonna be in trouble. I just hope both Marquis and Howry don't make it while Gaudin isn't on the roster.

I'm not a Marquis fan, but I don't think there's any denying he's contributed enough in the second half to merit a spot on the roster. Howry's inclusion on the roster while inevitable is still confounds me as it is nothing short of inexcusable.

Lou's comments make it seem like he's more likely to be named closer than left off the roster.

geez, remember when he was in the running to be the closer during spring training? that would have lasted two weeks and he probably would have been murdered outside wrigley.

Why didn't Marmol come in to help Cotts out? How many days rest does he need?

Howery has been used three days in a row so I am cutting him a little break.

Did you watch last night's game? As nasty as it was, I wouldn't want Marmol sitting in the bullpen, let alone coming into the game. The game was virtually meaningless for the Cubs.

Do you believe that risking someone's health to help win a meaningless ball game is really in the best interests of the team?

Marmol has been abused this season every chance we can rest him this weekend the better.

I'd like to see him get one inning in on either Saturday or Sunday to keep sharp, and that's about it for the remainder of the regular season.

No not abused used for the one out needed in the sixth. Just to keep loose and keep the playoff frame of mind going, and just one out

Chances are Lou will put Howry on the playoff roster. I'm just happy the guy is a FA and probably won't be here next year.

Not to beat a horse that has been dead quite some time, but why the hell did they choose to DFA Eyre instead of Howry? Eyre is only sporting a 221 ERA+ since his arrival in Philly. I swear to God, if Eyre ends up screwing us sometime this playoffs...

It was very clear from Lou's quotes throughout the season that he respected Howry's work ethic and attitude and did not feel the same way about Eyre. If you remember, one of the reason Eyre came here was that Dusty was the manager and I think he said something along the lines of liking Dusty because he didn't make him run during spring training.

If Lou doesn't like a guy, history shows that he will get his way and that guy will be out the door sooner or later. I think it wound up being later since Eyre was so effective the second half of '07 into the start of '08 when he came back from the DL. Once he started pitching like [expletive] (word editor), starting with the Crawford grand slam in TB, Lou wasted no time in showing him the exit.

It is, in other words, a detailed example of why major league managers are really bad at their jobs compared to people in other 7 figure a year positions.

Lets just hope we don't see Bob Howry in any playoff games unless were winning by alot. I really miss the good Bob Howry, who use to spot his good mid 90s fastball very well, and get hitters out. This Bob Howry throws 88-90, and if he doesn't spot his pitch in the right spot he gets crushed.
