From MLBtraderumors:

The following three names are being bandied about in the Yankees' clubhouse for center field next year: Nate McLouth, David DeJesus, and Matt Kemp. DeJesus seems the most reasonable target, though Robinson Cano could be part of a package for Kemp. DeJesus, it should be noted, played a poor center field this year according to the plus/minus system.

If McLouth is available, we should be able to match any Yankee offer. Obviously, Pie would be in the package. Including Cedeno would allow them to trade one or both of Wilson and Sanchez for more prospects. Throw in a couple of young pitchers and the offer should be competitive.

yankees better be careful about trading cano...after trading tabata, they'll only have melky cabrera left as an over-rated name to dangle out there in trade talks.

Eric Duncan still alive?

you can always count on Yankee fans to anoint someone new with that distinction. There is always a Shane Spencer or Scott Brosius available in the off season

I was gonna go there, but got hammered by Yankee fans on BTF for calling him no good in the offseason.

I'm lukewarm at best on Mclouth. His slugging this year is higher than he ever put up in the minors, and his HRs are more than double anything he ever did in the minors, so I have doubts if the power is sustainable. The .280 average / .360 OBP lines probably are, and the defense is good. His power spike this year I think will boost the price (in terms of prospects) above what I think he's worth if he can't replicate his power numbers. If we could get him for Pie plus filler, I'd do that, but I think he'll draw significantly more than that.

so he's the Geovanny Soto of center field. Clearly it's possible to see a jump in power in one year and for it to be sustainable

More often than not, it won't be sustainable. But you're right, it is possible, that's why I said I was lukewarm but not cold on him. I don't think he's a 25 hr a year guy, but I don't think he's a 10 hr a year guy at best either like his minor league numbers suggest. I'd be thrilled if we could get him without overpaying. I think Pitt would want something along the lines of Pie, Cedeno, and Marshall for him, and I don't think I'd do that.

Edit: Oh, and he's not the Geovany Soto of centerfield. The only guy that could earn that tag is if Geo himself if he decided he was bored playing catcher.

.280/.360 + 18-20 HRs + very good speed + good defense + youth + cheap contract = great CF

I might think about Pie + Cedeno + Marshall, but I would prefer Pie, Cedeno, plus 1-2 other prospects.

great BB:K rate and a doubles machine in the minors, and league-leading doubles this year surely indicates power isn't going away

he's clearly grown into power, which is not terribly uncommon. some guys i can think of are Garrett Anderson, Holliday, Chris Duncan, Beltran, Hunter, Carlos Guillen and I'm sure hundreds of others as well.

i like McLouth a lot

...

yeah i just plagiarized myself

I wouldn't mind adding McLouth, but I dunno if the Pirates are serious about trading him, and doubt they would trade him to the Cubs. Plus I don't think the Cubs really have the prospects to get him. I do think it's important, for this team to get a little younger offensivly. I would love to add a young CF or RF, who could potentially take over in the 3-4 spot next year or in the future.

Derrek Lee is getting older, and if he's on the decline he needs to be moved down in the order come next season or in 2010. Ramirez is over 30, and Soriano will be 33 next season. I still think those two have some good years left, but come 2010-2011 those guys might to decline some. If we can get a new number 3 hitter, with Soto as the clean up hitter. Then older players like Lee, Soriano and Ramirez batting around them, we could stay good for a while.
