Seems like a good bet...

The Cubs appear poised to offer manager Lou Piniella a contract extension at the end of the season. The team already has had preliminary talks with him, but the issue has been tabled until the offseason, Cubs chairman Crane Kenney said.

General manager Jim Hendry also might be in line for an extension

Wouldnt this be up to the new ownership?

As long as the current ownership owns the team, it can do whatever it wants. See Zambrano contract extension. Hendry has his own option clause anyway.

They deserve it, IMO.

Hendry certainly had his ups and downs till now, but the Cubs for whatever reason (realization that the offense hadn't been working without guys with a knack for getting on or catering to Baker) have changed their approach as far as position players while maintaining certain attributes in seeking out pitchers and rolling 7 on Dempster.

Bruce, does this success increase Trammell's possibilities of advancing outside the organization or will he still be bogged down b/c of the '03 Tigers? If not, is he possibly being groomed to take over for Piniella whenever he does hang them up?

The '03 Tigers won't have any effect on Trammell's job prospects. Everybody in the game knows what was going on there. I don't believe anybody is being "groomed" to take over for Piniella. They've been focused on this year. If Trammell doesn't take over for Lou _ and we're a long ways away from that _ you've still got Pat Listach and Ryne Sandberg in the organization.

I get the feeling that if the Cubs win the World Series, Lou will ride off into the sunset.

I thought I had heard Lou say early on that this was it. This was going to be his last contract and his last shot at a championship before retiring.

I remember that too. However he may want to go for one last season.

The bigger question though is what street gets renamed in piniella's honor? I vote for Waveland.

I don't think it would sound right for homers to be hit onto "Piniella". It just wouldn't be the same as Waveland. Maybe Clark, that doesn't have a lot of ring to it even though Wrigley is at Clark and Addison.

I wouldn't believe you if you told me November '06 that I'd be happy with this prospect

Agreed.

If the Cubs win Piniella will be bigger than Ditka.

Not sure I agree with that statement, but let's hope we find out for sure.

On one hand, a lot of Chicago people came to really dislike Ditka and thought he actually hurt the team more than he helped, at least after the Super Bowl. Plus, much of his popularity is actually outside of the Chicago Bears fandom, kids who fell in love with the Super Bowl shuffle Bears. But, the Bears are still a nearly 100% Chicago team, whereas a very large portion of Chicago hates the Cubs and would really hate Lou.

Plus, look at Ozzie and Francona. Neither of these guys have come anywhere close to as popular as Ditka, and both accomplished similar things to a theoretical Lou WS champ.

IIRC, He said the Cubs were the last team he'd manage, not that this was his last contract.

Waveland, Addison, and Clark are synonymous with Wrigley Field. We can't change those.

Sheffield however? Who would care?

Gary?

Wow, I thought from the get go Lou was set on 3 and done. And he was going to be done with baseball (at least putting on a uniform side of things). I was just going to make a post wondering if anybody else thought that IF the Cubs won the World Series that he would retire. Winning the World Series with the Cubs, is there really anything to do after that?

... But then again I'd want to stay around Chicago for a while after that was accomplished if I was him imagine the free drinks, steaks, first born sons etc. you'd be given if you led the Cubs to a World Series.
