Good stuff. I really wish this year turned out better for Kosuke. I still hold out hope that he will be a better player next year, based on the fact that Matsui had similar struggles his first season. I think he is a talented player who can be successful in the majors. He has shown the necessary skills, he just needs to make the adjustments and get his confidence back.

Bruce, has Lou said what his plans are for Fukudome from here on out? Is he just going to ride pine and be a defensive replacement, or will he get another chance to be the starting RF-er?

While the Shark has been good lately, I never really got on board with thinking we had to have him to make a huge difference in the playoffs. Of course, if he gets this blip straightened out he is an asset out of the pen, but Marmol and Wood, when right, can be enough.

Kosuke, on the other hand, would make a bigger difference if he could regain some early season success. But, that is looking pretty bleak at this point.

Maybe they could, but I'd like to at least have a third solid arm. Harden is probably going to be a 6 inning pitcher. There is likely to be at least one extra inning contest.

Fukudome ranks 256th in MLB in VORP, at only 5.3. Albert Pujols leads at 90.8. The three guys just ahead of Fukudome are Mark Ellis of Oakland, Emmanuel Lewis of San Francisco and Miguel Montero of Arizona

When the Webster kid has you beat, its time to give up.

I agree that it would be good to be able to depend on someone else. Maybe in the next couple of weeks if he doesn't get straightened out someone else could step up and inspire some confidence. Again, I see that role as important, but I think Kosuke getting right would factor more since he's a position player.

I wouldn't say Fukudome is worthless. He is very good defensively - it's just a shame that as of right now, his only real value is off the bench as a defensive replacement.

All season, I was wondering how he could swing the way he does and expect to hit at the ML level. I guess I just figured he knew what he was doing and his unorthodox mechanics were not going to be adjusted by the Perry.

I am assuming the reason he isn't hitting is that ML pitchers have found a good way to pitch to him with his front side flying open. I really hope he can put it together and be a force. If you look at his numbers month-to-month, it has been a steady decline. Too bad.

You don't understand the number of walks Emmanuel can draw.

Important to remember VORP only takes into account offense. Also important to remember than defense from your RF should be pretty far down your list on things to care about SAD FACE

Also, I think Harden goes ~7 in his postseason outing(s) They'll be willing to stretch him to 110-115 if necessary.

I think so too. I have no problem with him throwing 115 pitches each start. I'm willing to risk the chance that he gets hurt at some point in the playoffs than pull him too early and watch Neil Cotts or someone blow a really good start by him.

Wow...I knew Fukudome had been struggling, but hadn't realized he was that bad.

I'm stunned that his decent OBP doesn't get him a better VORP. Wow.

Emmanuel Lewis, indeed. I fixed that. Funny, but I never even watched that show. Maybe I need a day off.

As to other questions: Fukudome won't see much playing time; Howry may be getting back into good graces; Lou says he isn't sure what you're going to get from young relievers; Gaudin maybe by the end of the week or the end of this weekend.

scary time

I guess he's happier knowing exactly what kind of [expletive] you can get from Howry.
