121 pitches for Sheets. I really don't get it.

neither does ned yost.

What's funny about this is that Yost said he can't keep letting CC throw 120 every game yesterday.

So he takes him out and Gagne's first pitch...

I have a feeling he'll just get lucky and not have to pay for it this season.

depends what you mean. there's probably a good chance that sabathia and sheets will be healthy for the playoffs, but there's also a good chance that one or both will not be at his best because they've been worked too hard down the stretch.

Well to his credit

A) They are only 3 games up on a playoff spot

B) The score was 1-0

C) The bullpen pitched a lot of innings yesterday

D) It's September

E) Sheets only threw 54 pitches in his last start.

I am a big fan of watching PCs, but sometimes you guys take it too far. There are some instances where it is perfectly acceptable for your pitcher to throw 120 pitches, and this is one of them.

You should also consider that this is Ben "Walking Injury" Sheets. Tonight was his 13th win of the season, and it set a new career high, saying much about his durability.

But I in general agree with your point. 120 pitches is rarely that damaging. Beyond there, however, is the danger zone.

Your the ones who don't get it. It was a tight game and Sheets wanted to finish it. This pitch count thing has gotten out of hand. Do you talk in the thread everytime a guy goes over 100 pitches? I doubt it. Society has become so critical and now we live in the world where you are supposed to do as little as possible. When a guy wants to work more than others it is looked as a negative. As someone has pitched my entire life and still does at 32, I really don't see what the big deal is. But if he plays for a team you dislike everything can be looked at as negative I suppose. Just digging for ways to make yourself feel good?

Our 4 game lead makes me feel pretty good. I think you're the one who's insecure seeing that you feel the need to rebut our comments here.

In fairness to Ned, who is he going to bring in that gives the Crew a better chance to hold that 1 run lead? They don't really have anyone.

Drop by a Rich Harden thread some time or dig through some threads from 2003/2004/2005 whenever Mark Prior or Kerry Wood started. You'd see much of the same criticism and discussion in those threads as you'd see now, particularly when Dusty had Prior/Wood out there for 120+ pitches.

I, for one, was just tracking his pitch count out of my own interest. Despite the fact that, outside of Gagne, the Brewers have a decent bullpen, I don't think Yost has much faith in them so it's understandable that he would keep Sheets in there in a 1-0 game.

It's dumb for the fact that Yost's bullpen isn't as bad as he seems to think, but like I said, I can see why he would want to just leave his starter in there. This game doesn't even rank in the top-10 for "Dumbest things Ned Yost has done with a pitcher."

120 is generally considered a red flag anywhere. You appear to be in the same mindset of many Cub fans in 2003. Anything to get to the playoffs. No big deal to go 120, those guys are horses and will be fine.
