Maybe they should have strectched him out in the minors for a little while longer?

The Cards are usually a pretty smart organization. It used to be a rare occasion when they'd make a bad decision like this one. Let's hope Mozeliak keeps making bad decisions.

This certainly hurts their chances, but IIRC the Cards were winning without Carpenter before, and they're not going to lay down if Carpenter winds up on the DL again.

Also, starting pitching really isn't their primary concern, anyway. If Wainwright stays on track, their closer hole could be filled soon and they could definitely climb back into things.

Wait, they're seriously moving Wainwright back to closer?

It may not be their primary concern, but they should be concerned about it. Lohse has been bad his last three starts. Pineiro has been awful over his last six, and Wellemeyer has an ERA over 5.00 since July 1.

They're too far back for even the great St. Louis Cardinals to even come back from without Carpenter.

Only thing is, their schedule from here on out isn't that tough.

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 8/9 ...

"They've pretty much told me that they are grooming me down here to pitch in the back end (of the game) up there," Wainwright said after 27 pitches and an uneven two-thirds of an inning at Autozone Park. "They've made it clear to me that I'm down here for a reason, and that's to get ready to get guys out in the last inning or two."

No guarantee that he'll stay on course for that role with Carpenter down, but I don't see them stretching him out when their greatest need is obviously a closer, and he's got experience in that job.

Latest news on Carpenter is that he'll miss his next start, and was to be examined today.

Buddy in St. Louis says some people are claiming the Cardinals will shut Carpenter down until 2009. That will be almost two full seasons they've paid for him and gotten nothing. On top of paying most of Edmond's salary: they're not looking too smart or too lucky.

Eh we paid for a few lost years of Wood and Prior. Pretty much each team does with pitchers.

The moment I finished reading his email I fired this back at him.

Then I thanked him again for Edmonds.

"The doc said this was best-case," Carpenter continued. "He said it was like having a mild hamstring strain in your shoulder."

Carpenter said the plan is to rest the shoulder completely for two days and when the team begins its weekend series in Cincinnati reassess how the arm feels. He said there continues to be pain when he moves the arm through a throwing motion.

"When I don't feel that pain," he said, "I can throw."

He expects to do that sometime in Cincinnati.

The hope is that he'll only miss a start or two.

Chris Carpenter-S-Cardinals Aug. 15 - 4:35 pm et

Cardinals placed RHP Chris Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 11, with a right posterior shoulder strain.

Carpenter returned late last month from Tommy John surgery, but made it just three starts before more arm problems sidelined him. Brad Thompson will take his place in the rotation Friday night against the Reds, but so far at least the Cardinals have indicated that Carpenter's injury may not be major.

they're a game out of the wild card if they brewers lose tonight; they're almost certainly too far back to challenge for the division, but they're hardly out of the WC race.
