I hope I'm not looking ahead too much, but. . .

what are your preferences -- if any -- for wild card winners, assuming we win the Central? Brewers, Cardinals, Mets, Fish, Phils? Also, would you prefer the D'backs or Dodgers to come out of the west?

Is there anyone else here that would absolutely love to see a Cubs/Cardinals NLCS?

I'd love it because we'd be going to the World Series.

I remember saying that about the Marlins in 2003

Very much so. I'd love it for three reasons. One, because I think it would be an easy series win. Two, because I'd love to have my team beat the team of so many of my friends and colleagues who give me crap all the time for being a Cubs fan. And three, it's Cubs vs. Cards. I always get more psyched for those series than any others. Beating the Cards in the NLCS en route to our first World Series title in 100 years would be storybook.

Cardinals because they are the worst of the bunch, and Dodgers to win the west since the Dbacks own us pretty badly.

Then stop cheering for them to lose.

i don't really care. i guess i'd prefer it to be an NL central team, because the NL west has been lousy and the mets/phillies are likely to be more of a challenge in the first round than an NL west opponent. then again, if it's arizona i don't really feel like watching the cubs lose a road game and then get knocked out because we can't win in the desert. arizona's frontline pitching is also pretty intimidating.

I want the Dodgers out of the West, and I don't care who is the WC, as we're better than both the Cardinals and Brewers (and Mets). The Fish scare me, though, simply because we can never beat them. Ever.

We seriously need to start rooting for the Dodgers. Does anybody want any part of Webb/Haren/undefeated Unit in a short series? That have disaster written all over it.

If you're talking first round only, we can't play the wild card if it comes from the Central - thus nixing the Brewers and Cardinals. I think I'm right on that, maybe I'm crazy.

As for who I'd like to face in the first round, oddly enough the Mets. Outside of Santana, I think we have a very big starting pitching advantage over them.

Z/Santana: push

Harden/Oliver Perez: Harden

Demp/John Maine: Demp

Lilly/Pelfrey (or Pedro): Lilly

Their offense is tough, but I don't think it's that much tougher than the Cubs. The Marlins always scare me and the Phillies have a slightly better rotation (and better offense) than the Mets.

And I'd prefer the Dodgers to win the West.

Honestly, the Phillies and Brewers are the only teams that I think could possibly beat the Cubs in the playoffs. If we somehow avoided playing either, I'd order World Series tickets before the NLDS.

But if they play each other in the first round.... which is a real possibility.

I think a "worst-case" scenario for the Cubs would be Phillies-Brewers-Dbacks in the playoffs, simply because I think those are the best three teams in the league after the Cubs. If, somehow, a combination of the Mets-Marlins-Dodgers-Cards made the playoffs, it would make the path to the World Series statistically easier.

That said, I think the Cubs could and would beat a Webb-Haren-Johnson-Rain playoff rotation, as well as a Sabathia-Sheets-Parra-Sabathia-fast track to injury playoff rotation. Just as easily, though, the offense could go into one of those crazy post-ASB-like droughts, and lose to anybody. Gotta like the odds, though.

So, I guess my "preference" would be the Cubs making the playoffs with the rotation set the way they want, and everyone healthy and producing at expected levels.

Dodgers, Mets, Phillies are my preferred opponents.

Diamondbacks have insane starting pitching, Brewers are the second-best team in the NL (though if we play them, that means we are in the NLCS), and seeing the Marlins in Wrigley for a playoff game would make me vomit.

I dont have any real preference yet on who they play, its that its a short series that im worried about. The Cubs are the best team in the NL and i feel much better about them in 7 game series than 5.

I wouldn't feel better unless it was something like best of 41. Otherwise, it's all a coinflip anyways.

yeah i certainly think the cubs CAN beat those rotations, but if they play a 5 game series, fluky things can happen and the cubs can be out in a matter of days. i guess teams with better #1/#2's are a bigger threat to pull off an upset.
