I would like to see Dubois brought up mainly because if we are bringing up Pie, Hoffpair and Hill, we would have and even more predominately LH bench. Personally I would rather see Dubios ph against a LH than any other option we currently have or would have.

Dubois played last night and hit two home runs. I wouldn't mind having him come up as a right handed power hitter off the bench.

I would think Cashner would.

I highly doubt it.

Agreed; he hasn't pitched above Boise et; they certainly wouldn't call him up now, use a spot on the 40-man roster, and start the option clock ticking. Maybe if he signed a bit earlier and was liights out from the beginning.

I see that he has started the two games he has pitched in this year, but only went 1 IP and 1.2 IP. It doesn't look like he did bad or anything to get pulled, so I was wondering is that a common thing in Low ball to start pitchers and just throw them a couple innings like that? And I remember reading when Cashner first got drafted we were thinking about converting him to a Starter, is that still a plan or an option?

It is very common for pitchers who have recently been drafted to be given only a few short innings of work. Most of those guys have already pitched a significant portion of the season as it is. They haven't built up the arm strength or endurance to pitch a whole lot of innings, especially considering most of the guys they face in the minors are much better than anything they faced in HS or college. So, these guys typically are placed on strict pitch counts that will only get them through one or two innings.

As for whether he'll be a reliever or starter, next season will likely provide that answer. For now, I think they'll pitch him for 1-2 innings at a time to keep his arm fresh and see how good his stuff is. He won't get called up in September unless he blows away the competition. Next season, he'll be invited to spring training and will be more thoroughly evaluated there by Rothschild, Piniella, et al. If they really like what they see and the bullpen is a bit thin, I wouldn't be surprised to see him up with the Cubs as a reliever. If there's depth in the pen and Cashner looks like he can maintain his stuff over the course of 5-6 innings, he'll start the season as a starter and move through the minors from there.

Right now our pop off the bench is Johnson if he doesn't play....I love the guy and he's played well, but we need some more pop from the right handed side besides Johnson and Blanco.

Plays catcher and 3b, 1b too. With a couple of roster spots added (3 for 2 in the oakland trade, Eyre DFA) to the 40, Casey McGehee would make a ton of sense as the 3rd catcher. He's not going to blow you away at the plate or on defense, but he can hold his own enough to man that 3rd spot as good as a Koyie Hill, and it's better than bringing up Castillo. Plus I'm sure we'll see Jake Fox as some RH pop off the bench now that he's hot in AA, and he's another "emergency" catcher, although that's the extent of his catching abilities anymore.

Wouldn't mind seeing this guy

Are people opposed to calling up Castillo because it will start his clock or something? I guess I can understand that, he could probably use another year in the minors anyway. How old is Welington?

Welington Castillo turned 21 in April. His baseball cube stats go back to 2006, with 2007 and 2008 being his only two full seasons. I'm guessing he does not need to be added to the 40-man this offseason for rule 5 purposes, although I may be wrong. If they called him up they would have to add him to the 40-man, that would mean optioning him next season. He's still a few years away, most likely, which means if you can, there's no reason to start the option clock next year unless you have to for rule 5 purposes.

Castillo is 21. And yes, that's why I would be opposed to him coming up. The 3rd catcher really isn't going to be used unless for an emergency, and I'm pretty sure Castillo is not on the list that needs to be put on the 40 man this year. He would then have to use a major league option to send him down next year after Spring Training. I would rather save that option and put him on the 40 next year if he's still doing well.

Thanks for the info, makes sense not to call him up yet then.

Your guess is correct, Welington doesn't need to be added to the 40-man this offseason.

Which means the Cubs need a RH hitter to play DH against lefties. They can add that guy on Aug 31, but they need it. It will probably the post-season roster of a pitcher who doesn't make it (either Howry or Marquis). They rested Fukudome against a lefty on Saturday, which meant Cedeno at 2B. Cedeno can't be DH, neither can Blanco.

Who do you think there after?

Any names that looks most likely?

The guys who have great numbers against lefties, and are likely to clear waivers are from Baltimore -- Payton and Millar. And possibly Garciaparra from the Dodgers. Trade the guy they got from Philly for Eyre for either of them on August 30, and I like the deal.

I really wouldn't mind one of those guys just solely for the playoff and if he wouldn't have to give up much.

Dempster and Millar on the same team? I guarantee you, the Cubs will not be uptight/stiff team whatsoever. Anybody remember that MOCK feud Millar and Dempster had earlier this yr?

I wouldn't opposed a Kevin Millar deal. And I am sure neither Lee or Dempster would either.

I can't see Millar or Payton getting past the Rays or the Mets. The Rays have been trying to add a bat even before Crawford and Langoria got hurt.

As has been noted elsewhere, Millar and Payton (and Huff) did end up clearing waivers.

In other news, Carrie Muskat has this nugget today:

Piniella and assistant general manager Randy Bush had a brief discussion about September callups, and the Cubs will likely add six players. Among those expected to join the big league team is catcher Koyie Hill. "We don't want to get overloaded," Piniella said

My guess at the six:

1. Hoffpauir

2. Dubois

3. Pie

4. K. Hill

5. Ascanio

6. Hart

I hope Ascanio comes up and pitches so lights out that Howry is left off the playoff roster.
