I sure am happy with mediocre pitching. Yep.

Yet he's one out from a quality start.

I can't say that I'm happy with mediocre pitching. I'm just not mad about it either. That's kind of what mediocre is.

Exactly. Sure would be nice to not have a mediocre pitcher every 5 days, but when the other pitchers are dominating, I can't complain about 6 IP 3 ER. In fact the Pirates would have to have that performance once a week.

He's given up 8 hits and a walk in 6 innings. He's lucky only 3 runs crossed the plate.

And this is againt the Pirates of all teams. Of all teams to be mediocre against...

In a pennant race, mediocrity steams me up a little. I guess we're just different like that.

He's a 5th starter...

Awesome. Go on the road agasint the second best team in the NL facing CC and Sheets and dominate them. Come home and play the freakin Triple A Pirates and do absolutley nothing.

The list of teams, even among pennant contenders, that have five non-mediocre starters is pretty small.

The Pirates are a good offensive team. It's the pitching that blows.

If only the Cub offense knew that...

Can we all agree that we're extremely happy to have Marquis "bringing down" this staff and not Estes?

I'm pretty sure Estes's stats were so bad that they made an otherwise dominant rotation's overall stats look just above average...

i'd rather the cubs do nothing today than against the brewers.

Jeff Karstens is out pitching him.

Good god yes! I think Estes had that one great start against the Reds and that was it.

We also got away with not having a Marquis start during that series. Not a coincidence.

I hope Marquis is happy and relaxed that he's still here (given he won't be on post-season roster again). Call me an optimist.

7 IP, 7 hits, 2 runs.

Final: Cubs 6 Scallywags 3

I was half right with these estimations.

Funny how the way that Karstens is pitching and the Cubs are hitting affects how Marquis' performance is judged. If it were 6-3, everyone would be saying how Marquis did a nice job of keeping the team in the game and did what he needed to do.

I still say Lee need to be hitting 6th. He is not close to the best hitter on this team.

He actually is quite close. Between Lee, Soriano, Ramirez, Soto, Theriot and Edmonds (Cub version), there are 6 very similar hitters in terms of EqA and VORP.

Good for Jeff Karstens. Not necessarily bad for Marquis.

that's a silly point to make. the guy hasn't given up a run, so he'd be outpitching just about anybody at this point.
