kiss off the Braves this year, they are DONE

Be careful, it's pretty windy out on that limb.

the Braves are 7.5 games back with 3 very good teams ahead of them. Hudsons done for the season, Chippers back to the DL, and now Tex is gone. I think its pretty safe to say they're done.

I think he was being sarcastic. As in "way to go out on a limb" with that obvious statement.

Better than zero chance that Salty turns out to be the worst player in that Braves package that they sent to the Rangers. He hasn't been impressive at all for the Rangers. Andrus and Perez look like future stars. Matt Harrison is already in their rotation.

Also, I don't think the Angels got Tiex all that cheaply. Kotchman put up a 119 OPS+ last year at 24 years of age (Tiexeira is current 139). Marek could be a potential closer. A pretty hefty price for a 2 month rental. He and Boras have made no bones that they're going to market and signing with the highest bidder in the offseason. Probably the Yankees since they finally get Giambi's contract off the books.

The Angels just got their first patient hitter, essentially. Their differential does not at all support their record. The Cubs can take them.

I'd have offered DLee for Tex, but that's just me and I'd probably make a lousy GM.

Any deal would have hinged on a long-term deal, though.

not a chance. And if we did acquire him I would almost rather lose him than pay him what he'll want.

Does anyone think Casey Kotchman is overrated? Whenever I watch Angels games, the announcers say "He's the toughest man in baseball to strike out, what a bad dude! Don't mess with the Kotch!" But come on. Does anyone forsee a Sean Casey-like career for this guy? Sean Casey was one of the tougher guys to strike out too.

The Angels won't get anywhere in the playoffs until Vladimir Guerrero stops making a bid for being the worst postseason performer of all time for a player of his calibur.

Was Saltalamacchia the most overrated prospect since Andy Marte? The Cubs ought to hire the guy responsible for hyping up Braves' prospects.

He's still only 23 so he could still put up big numbers. If I remember correctly, they also got Elvis Andrus who is a great prospect.

yes you would. i'd hate to see the trades you'd have made based on your reactions in the game thread.

And Neftali Feliz is a really good prospect too.

What happened to Kotchman's patience this year? Odd.

Anyway, I doubt there was too much of a market for Teix... how many contenders desperately need a first baseman bad enough to give up something for him? Especially considering that they're already printing his jersey's up in Baltimore.

The Braves at least got something, but I would have liked this deal a lot more for them if they were getting 2007's Casey Kotchman.

To hear Angels fans gripe, Mickey Hatcher sounds like Lenny Harris as a hitting coach, obsessed with getting guys to take pitches the other way, rather than to drive the ball. Change may do Kotchman well.

Did he say hit all pitches the other way or did he say to take the outside pitches the other way? I really doubt he told them not to drive the ball.

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Braves picked the Angels' offer for Mark Teixeira over a package of Chad Tracy and Micah Owings from the Diamondbacks.

Rosenthal also says the Braves tried to insert Will Ohman into the Angels' deal with the goal of acquiring additionals youngsters, but that it didn't work. Ohman remains likely to be moved before the deadline.

The minor league pitcher the Braves got must be pretty good, because The D-Backs offer seems a lot better on paper.

I remember reading posts from here that Ohman was kind of a mega jerk. It might have been Bruce and I'm pretty sure it was somebody who either covered or worked w/the Cubs.

Was this little dig really necessary?

I remember he was getting frusterated and making some unfavorable comments toward the end of last year. He was basically getting the Bob Howry treatment from the fans and media.

Anway, I have a strong feeling that he'll end up on the Brewers.

Why? It's what Harris is doing in Washington? Some guys think the only way to hit is exactly the way they did. When you're a crappy hitter like Lenny Harris or Mickey Hatcher you survived by dumping the ball to opposite field. Just because they're big leauge instructors doesn't mean they can't be morons.

Does anybody realize how bad the Angels offense is?

How is the "best team in baseball" so crappy offensively?

Is it really that hard to figure out?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?sort=runs&split=0&group=9&season=2008&seasonType=2&statType=pitching&type=reg

They're definitely outplaying their pythag by quite a bit, but they have been very good at preventing runs.

What I don't understand is ...is he telling all the players to just dump the ball in right, inside out the swing or drive the outside strike to right? I didn't say they couldn't be morons but telling all your hitters not to drive the ball seems quite absurd. I'm just curious because I thought what you wrote was interesting and I wanted to find out what Hatcher is doing.
