Now that Brett and the Packers have almost officially cut ties, he seems extremely unhappy with them. The Bears are the Packers' biggest rivals and members of the best rivalry in the NFL. If he goes to Minnesota, he has the best chance of winning a Super Bowl. Now a few weeks ago I thought this was impossible, but the chances have to be growing that he comes to the Bears. Would Jerry want to set the Bears back (from the perspective of Grossman and Orton) a few more years by getting Brett? What would they have to give up? A first rounder? Mark Anderson? The Bears' fourth linebacker? Second, the issue of cap room needs to be considered. The Bears have 9 million left. Brett gets 12 million this year. You can either cut 3 million worth of salary or give Brett a 3 million dollar signing bonus and be maxed out in cap. Angelo said that he promised Kyle and Rex an open competition, but he didn't say that he wouldn't add another to the competition.

Steve Smith might be available too.

I think we're a long way from acquiring Favre. You sure we have 9 million left under the cap? I've heard smaller numbers than that.

I still don't think Favre would come here for the same reason he won't go to alot of other teams: he doesn't consider us to be a Super Bowl contender. He doesn't want to play just to play.

neither rex nor orton have a very extended future starting in the nfl.

Yeah, it's whoever lasts best until next April.

Favre just said he would look into being traded to Tampa Bay. Jeff Garcia only wants to start.

Bucaneers get Favre, Bears trade for Garcia to be the protective, efficient offensive captain we haven't been able to fully get yet.

Garcia in 2007: 4 ints, 2 fumbles lost in 13 games and 327 passing attempts.

Gruden would keep Garcia. he can never have enough QB's.

Nope. Garcia will threathen to retired, then ESPN will jump on the "Garcia watch" and follow him around like a teenager after Erin Andrews. ESPN will then give Garcia his own segment on the "Bottomline" and we'll get second-by-second update as to what Garcia wants to do, blah, blah, blah.

Kidding aside, if the Bucs do land Favre, Garcia will officially ask to be either released or dealt. And I hope the Bears are in line to get Garcia if he becomes available. If they are not, then that is a sign that they are not committing to improving the offense.

What does everyone thing of Orton getting the start Thursday?

Hadn't heard that yet. How did they come to that decision? Are they saying that it means he's ahead of Grossman right now or are they planning on having Grossman start the second game?

It's Orton 1st quarter and Grossman 2nd quarter for the first game.

Vice versa for the second game.

Lovie and Turner both were adamant not to read into this, that it's more like a "flip a coin" situation.

The problem I would have with acquiring Favre is this: he's gone back n' forth on what he wants to do, pretty much on a daily basis. What if he plays 3 or 4 weeks, doesn't like what he sees, and decides to re-retire? In the case of the Bucs, you now don't have Favre, you probably lost Garcia to a trade because he only wants to start, and you've got Simms who by all accounts I've heard doesn't like it in Tampa. Not a real good situation to be in, and it seems like a real possibility given Favre likes to change his mind depending on the day of the week.

Given the way Favre has behaved in this, I'm beginning to understand why Angelo has apparently showed no interest. The man doesn't appear to be in the right frame of mind to play football.

I was thinking this the other day.

I guess they've got quite a logjam at QB in Tampa.

Brian Griese

Josh Johnson

Jeff Garcia

Luke McCown

Chris Simms

If they sign Favre, someone's got to go. Then another couple will probably be cut.

Favre would reportedly go to the Bears, I just don't think the Bears have any interest. And at this point, I'm not sure I blame them. Sure, he's vastly superior to the other guys. However, he's also looked like crap at times in recent years. This is not a baseball pitcher just taking his arsenal with him to the next destination. We're deep into training camp and Favre hasn't practiced a down. Perhaps that won't matter with GB, where he knows the system. But he would have to learn the Bears offense, or, perhaps, the Bears would have to completely readjust their offense for him. If they could have figured out a way to make a deal in June, I would have been all over it. But GB wasn't going to give a division rival a full training camp with Favre. Considering how mediocre he was in 2005 and 2006, I'm not sure any team getting him in mid-August is going to have a great chance to succeed with him at QB.

Every day that passes makes me more and more concerned about the offensive line. This is a disaster in the making at this point.

Honestly Favre to the Bears would be a disaster for all the reasons above. Then you go into the cap situation and what we'd have to do to accommodate someone who honestly isn't going to put us over the top this year. Remember how Favre played in 2005 with no offensive line? It would be like that again. Then after this year, he would either retire and pull this crap he's pulling on GB again. By that point Grossman and Orton will be gone, and we'll have to draft a QB (who surely won't be ready to contribute this year, thus won't be a first round pick because Angelo will probably have another more important hole to fill first) or sign a veteran FA, and we all know how those have worked out for us over the years.

So year, sitting here dreaming about it, it seems like a nice scenario, and it would be funny to stick it to GB. But really looking into it, it doesn't make sense short term or long term and it kinda goes against everything Angelo has been doing for years.

Thank you. There's still so much focus on the QB battle, and I'm wondering if it even matters given that line.

Chris Williams needs to get his ass on the field.

I'm starting to wonder if he's going to...

Did the Bears screw up the scouting on this guy? I heard that several teams took him off their draft board because of a prior neck injury. While he played with it in college -- could that be what is extending his time out of the lineup? All that stuff is pretty much connected back there...

Another issue that came up was a report that he was soft. Some teams supposedly didn't like his "nice guy" personality. Missing 2 weeks of practice due to a tight back at the beginning of your career seems like something that would piss off most football coaches and make a lot of personel people doubt your committment.

It's also kind of frustrating to not really know what the *real* issue is. I wouldn't expect the team to openly discuss the internal workings of this situation. Who knows -- maybe the kid is soft and he's telling the trainers he can't go when they think he could. No way to really know that.

My expectations are set really really low for this year. Our offense might be the worst ever. Are we ever going to see a good QB in Chicago? But this year that's is one of many problems. Rookie RB, mediocre at best WR's, abysmal QB, and nonexistent offensive line.

I can choose to flip the channel when the Bears go on offense, or lose my voice yelling at the TV. I'll be doing the latter :)

Now reports are coming out that a report surfaced a few hours before the draft saying that Williams had back problems.

The Bears are so childish. This is professional football. People will get their feelings hurt. Name a QB and say that he was better than the other so far. What is so hard about that?

Even reporters like David Haugh, and announcers like Tom Thayer have admitted that neither has been better than the other. Both have been pretty boringly "ok". They've had a few mistakes, they've had a few nice moments, but generally, they've both been meh. Neither is ahead of the other, though Haugh said if pinned down, he's say Orton's been better, but not in any significant fashion.

Then Orton is better. I've heard Rex is a great practice QB, but an average to below average game QB. If he can't blow Orton out of the water in practice, he is the #2 QB.

Also, stop saying that Rex is a game manager and Rex is not. Both have around the same TDs to INTs. A game manager doesn't throw 50/50. Now maybe Orton is better at managing the game now, but we don't really know that from experience.

And stop saying that Orton is 12-3 or whatever as a starter. He was the worst starting QB in 2005. He was 12-3 in spite of his play. I remember that Sunday night game when Orton was QB and Rex came in. The offense starting clicking right away. The field was opened up.

I really like this competition thing we have going on @ the QB position..plus think about it...what is going through the Colt's minds right now? They don't know if we will be punting all day, or turning the ball over 5 times come the season opener..
