Tennesee: RHP Grant Johnson (Tenn & Daytona: 1-4, 6.52 ERA, 38.2 IP, 19 K/16 BB)

Daytona: LHP Rich Hill (Daytona, Mesa & Iowa: 3-6, 5.67 ERA, 39.2 IP, 49 K/36 BB)

Peoria: RHP Audy Santana (1-5, 4.13 ERA, 52.1 IP, 40 K/21 BB)

Mesa: RHP Miguel Sierra (1-0, 4.43 ERA, 20.1 IP, 9 K/6 BB)

Mesa starters are a guess. Andrew Cashner is expected to make his pro debut sometime this week with Mesa.

I will kiss you Rich Hill if you can throw 85 pitches with at least 50 strikes and 2 or fewer walks.

You might want to sweeten the reward a little.

Miguel Sierra gets the start on the mound for Mesa. Logan Watkins makes his first professional start at second base, Junior Lake stays at shortstop and Starlin Castro shifts to third base.

Haha, the top 3 in OPS in the AZL are all on Mesa. Nelson Perez at 1.175 and then Sean Hoorelbeke and John Contreras at 1.171.

Matt Cerda just hit his first pro HR following a Starlin Castro double. Logan Watkins struck out to end the top of the first inning.

You've obviously never kissed me. :P

That HR raised Cerda's SLG 70 points. He's really shown some remarkable plate discipline at Mesa too, I'm pretty happy with his pro debut. Any reports on how his defense has come along?

No clue. I know he's been working closely with the catching instructor down in Mesa (Kerry Wood's catcher from high school) but he's it seems like he's been DHing for about 2 straight weeks. I don't mind him DHing since he left games for a defensive replacement by the 6th or so when he caught and this way he'll get more at bats. He'll have more than enough time to work on catching in instructs this fall and extended spring training next season.

His plate discipline has been unreal (51 at bats: 9 BB and 7 strikeouts). He seems to have a great grasp of the strike zone, especially for a high school draftee.

How the hell did we end up with a high school kid who has plate discipline?

Vincent Logan Watkins got a bunt single to third base his second time up. And then stole a base.

Nelson Perez hit his 7th HR for Mesa in the 5th. He is back to slugging over .800 (!) in the AZL. Ridiculous. That HR ties him with teammate John Contreras for the most HRs in the AZL.

Logan Watkins is 3 for 4 now...bunt single, IF single to shortstop and a ground single to CF. Cerda also added a single to make him 2 for 4.

Hard throwing 18-year old Yohan Gonzalez had a fanastic outing: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.

Tarlandas Mitchell threw today despite spraining his ankle last week and he was bad. David Cales is in now. Still no Cashner. :(

So I haven't been paying attention to the minor league stuff for a couple years but yikes Grant Johnson is putting up some terrible numbers so far. Anybody know what is going on with him?

I think general suckage is probably the best explanation.

RF N. Perez 1/5, R, HR (7), 2 RBI, 2 K - tied for AZL lead in HR

hey what'd we say about not doing this?

It makes me smile every time, though.

Honestly, I haven't paid attention to Johnson in a long time.

His FB is down in velocity (and doesn't have much movement). His slider has sucked ever since he came to the Cubs. He hasn't rebounded from injury when he was still at Notre Dame.

FSL games in July and August suck. Between that and Aprils in the MWL which could hurt who knows how many arms, the Cubs have some major weather issues to deal with on the farm.

But, according to Soriano this N. Perez is going to be really good. :D
