RHP Aaron Harang still is bothered by stiffness and soreness in his right forearm and is returning to Cincinnati tonight. He will be examined tomorrow, including an MRI.

Harang threw 63 pitches on 2 days rest in an extra inning game. He was brought back after that relief performance on 3 days rest, only to get shelled, knocked out in the 4th after 73 pitches. He's been terrible ever since.

Shouldn't have pitched him in that extra inning game on 2 days rest.

Had he even pitched adequately in that game, it makes me wonder how many pitches Dusty would have let him throw.

So does that mean that you're coming around to our way of thinking concerning his abuse? :D

That move to me was comparable to when Lieber came back out after the lengthy rain delay, and the end result may be the same.

I have never been high on Dusty.

The only pitchers he had left was Harang, Volquez, and Cueto. I don't blame him for using Harang, but the problem I have with it is pitching him 3 days later. Should have called somebody up and skipped his start.

I thought he didn't even need to call somebody up, I thought they had an offday sprinkled in there(and maybe a recent callup), where he could've just moved everybody up and kept everyone on normal rest. That's all from the top of my head though.

They had an off day the day after the game, but we used ever single player on the roster in that game except for Cueto. Arroyo didn't pitch, he pinch ran for Griffey. The day after the DFA'd Hatteberg and called Bruce up while Corey Patterson was still on the roster. They could have just has easily called up a pitcher and DFA'd Patterson as well, pushing everybody back. He could have given Fogg a spot start (he pitched 2/3rds of an inning), or you could have sent Matt Belisle to AAA (had a 7.28 ERA at the time and was eventually set down) and called up somebody to plug in. Dusty did none of it. Cueto started on normal rest, then he threw Arroyo on 3 days rest, Harang on 3 days rest, and Volquez went on normal rest finally putting the rotation back in order. So instead of calling somebody up and having Arroyo and Harang go on normal rest (ideally Harang would have been going on more than normal rest) he decided to keep everything as is and pitch Harang on 3 days rest.

no pitcher in baseball has thrown more pitches the past 3 years than Harang

i'm not sure this is completely Dusty's fault

That's worth noting, but that makes it a staggering coincidence that his performance went completely in the tank after that extra innings debacle.

Dude, the breaks are always beating me. That's why I like to go up to the mountains with my dog and a good scotch and fish

When asked if he was feeling healthy, Harang took a long pause.

"Sometimes yeah, sometimes no," he responded. "It varies from day to day. Some days you wake up and feel great. Other days you feel like trash. Some of the days I've woken up and felt like trash were days I was pitching."

be afraid, reds fans.

Smart teams have forced position players to pitch rather than hurt their ace. One game, especially to the reds who aren't in the race, is not worth losing Harang for any period of time.

Exactly. However, everyone who visits NSBB is quite aware that Dusty isn't smart. Heck, I would have put the big boy (Harang) at 1b and let whoever was playing 1st have a crack at the rotation.

When a game gets to the point where you have zero bench left other than your other starters, it's time to let anyone who isn't a rotation guy pitch if they want to pitch. The outcome of one game should never take precedence over the outcome of a career.

Yeah I'd throw a position guy first. Just tank it, who cares it's one game and not worth the many games Harang will probably now be out.

Didn't some team just throw a position player a couple days ago too? Padres maybe?

Well unless one of those rotation guys yet to pitch is Marquis. I'd make him do a Harang
