Back to the original question, my guess is that Marshall gets bumped to AAA and Eyre takes Cotts spot when he returns.

The team would be:

C: Soto

1b: Lee

2b: DeRosa

SS:Theriot

3b:Ramirez

OF: Soriano, Edmonds, Fukudome

SP: Zambrano, Harden, Lilly, Dempster, Marquis

Bench: Johnson, Cedeno, Blanco, Fontenot, Ward

Bullpen: Wood, Marmol, Howry, Eyre, Lieber, Gaudin, Wuertz

I don't think they will bump Marquis to the pen, at least not yet. If that's the case, then I guess you could drop Wuertz to AAA and bring up Marshall and slide Marquis to the pen.

Also, if they are determined to get another lefty, Cotts could take Wuertz's spot. Based on the way Lou has used Wuertz, this wouldn't surprise me either.

Wuertz has not been good this year....he has never been able to control his fastball but this year his slider isn't even biting...i think his days as a Cub are numbered

He has the best ERA on the team

ERA is a pretty terrible way to try to value relief pitchers...

In terms of expected wins added (WXRL), here is how the Cubs relievers rank for 2008.

Marmol

Wood

Howry

Lieber

Eyre

Marshall

Ascaino

Cotts

Wuertz

Of course thats only for 2008, so it doesnt necessarily mean thats how they will be in the future. The Cubs would be complete idiots to give up Wuertz this year as Wood, Howry, Lieber, and Eyre will be FAs after this year.

Doesn't leverage play a significant role in WXRL? It's not Wuertz's fault that Lou only uses him when the team is down by 5 or up by 14.

Well, yeah I guess it does since WXRL is based off of win expectancy. So if Wuertz comes into a 10-1 game and pitches a scoreless 7th inning he changes the win expectancy by very little. Someone correct me if I'm wrong there.

But believe it or not, but only Wood, Marmol, and Howry have a higher pLI in the pen than Wuertz.

The Creature with another home run tonight, and hes OPSing 1.146. I know weve been there, done that, but unless they opt to go with an extra pitcher, he could be a prime replacement for Murton until Soriano gets back. After the trade, there is an extra spot open on the 40 man.
I still think Hoffpauir is more likely.

If Soriano wasn't close to coming back they might think about adding a RH hitter like Dubois to the 40 man but if he is going to be back right after the all star break it would be a waste to add someone just to sit on the bench for a few games. I agree it will probably be Hoffpauir even though it makes the bench a bit LH heavy. My guess is Hoffpauir in, Marshall (unfortunately) out for now. When Eyre comes back most likely Wuertz goes down since Lou seems to like having two lefties in the pen. When Soriano comes back Hoffpauir goes back down. Even if Marquis struggles Gaudin probably gets a shot at his rotation spot before Marshall with Marquis going to the bullpen unless they can find someone to dump him on. Hendry just doesn't have a history of DFA'ing guys who still have significant money left on their contracts.

That is doable now after the trade. If not Duboise, then who else could be a 40-man candidate? I would think Hendry would leave it open as long as possible in case he makes another trade.

Why in the world would they carry Lieber, Marquis, and Gaudin all in the pen? Seems if Marshall is in the rotation, at least 1 of those guys has to be gone (dfa or trade). Given that Lou seems to want 2 LHP in the rotation, I'd say Lieber gets DFA or Marquis traded.

Wuertz has been much too good to put in AAA so that we can have 3 long men.

Does Wuertz even have any options left?

Yes, he still has 1 left.

Really? Huh. I was under the impression he was done with those after 11 years in the organization. Well, send him down then, he's not being used at all.

my preference would be to dump Lieber. He's redundant with Gaudin and Marshall available as starters/long-relievers.

actually, my real preference would be to dump Lieber, move Marquis to the pen and insert Marshall into the "5th" spot. i'd be shocked if the did that, but:

Rotation:

Zambrano

Harden

Lilly

Dempster

Marshall

Pen:

Marquis

Gaudin

Wuertz

Eyre

Marmol

Wood

Howry

Or take it a step further and just get rid of Marquis all together and insert Cotts in the pen.

I'd rather dump Marquis, he sucks.

I'd rather dump Marquis to any willing taker (if any, if not, then release), and find a taker for Howry. I'd rather have Wuertz getting the mop up innings that Howry is taking up at this point, I have little hope that Howry will provide any VORP in the second half, unlike Wuertz.

I wouldnt be surprised if we could get a decent bench player for Marquis from a pitching desperate team. Hes a proven inning eater, and could be an OK 4-5 starter in a more pitcher friendly park than Wrigley.

This should be another order of buisness: Chad Fox. Hes taking up a 40 man spot. Now that Gaudins here, unless Wuertz or someone are on the trading block, I cant imagine him coming back, even in September. Time the old DFA.

They do have an extra spot right now, so they aren't desperate for his. At the very least they should put him on the 60-day, he's already been gone for about 55.

they may as well just dump lieber.

I think his presence is a significant factor in Marquis not being lifted from the rotation.

Now that Gaudin is here we can stick him in the rotation and DFA one of Marquis/Lieber. Preferably Marquis.
