What will it be?

Locks:

Starters:

1B Lee

2B DeRo

3B ARam

SS Theriot

LF Sori

CF Edmonds

RF Fukudome

C Soto

Rotation:

Z

Harden

Demp

Lilly

Marquis (For now)

Bullpen

Wuertz

Gaudin

Howry

Eyre

Marmol

Wood

Bench

Blanco

Johnson

Ward

Thats 23

12 Position players

11 Pitchers

More than likely going to be on the roster, one of the following:

Cedeno

Fontenot

So, the 25 man?

12 pitchers?

Then it will probably be Cotts or Marshall, with Hill a distant possibility later on.

11 pitchers:

Hoff, or the other of Fontenot/Cedeno

Aye?

The bench is going to be Johnson, Ward, Blanco, Fontenot, Cedeno

You forgot Lieber in your pitching staff, I have a hard time seeing him DFAd.

Z

Harden

Lilly

Dempster

Marshall/Marquis

Lieber

Gaudin

Eyre

Howry

Marmol

Wood

Cotts/Wuertz

I think Wuertz winds up getting demoted, which is silly, but there's really just too many pitchers, not enough spots.

I wouldnt be surprised of Cotts or Wuertz end up being traded by the end of the month.

they may as well just dump lieber.

That would be the best move, but I dont know if it will happen. Hes still a pretty decent long man, but we now have Gaudin for that, and maybe Marquis. Marquis could also be a trade candidate. Granted, hes Jason Marquis, but hes an innings eater, and some team might show some interest.

Wuertz has not been good this year....he has never been able to control his fastball but this year his slider isn't even biting...i think his days as a Cub are numbered

His 1.33 WHIP, 2.70 ERA, and 166 ERA+ beg to differ with the definition of "good".

Honestly, when Eyre comes back, it should be one of Eyre/Cotts/Lieber that's most likely gone.

Barring a trade, I can see Marshall being sent back t Iowa to stay stretched out as a starter.

I hope you aren't serious. Was 6 innings at St. Louis not enough or something?

I wasn't saying that's what I WANT the Cubs to do, but rather what I think they might do. I'd much rather see Marshall replace Marquis in the rotation, but barring that I'd rather Marshall star in Iowa than be in the Cubs' bullpen.

It's odd, everyone seems to be under the impression that Wuertz has a horrible walk rate.

He has walked 8 in his last 14 innings, including 8 in a 9 IP span.

That's a bit of an odd way to say no walks in his last 5 IP. His walk rate overall isn't bad, but he did have a brief bout with wildness, during which he allowed one earned run.

Just explaining the perception is all.

The Creature with another home run tonight, and hes OPSing 1.146. I know weve been there, done that, but unless they opt to go with an extra pitcher, he could be a prime replacement for Murton until Soriano gets back. After the trade, there is an extra spot open on the 40 man.

Howry, anyone?

I still think Hoffpauir is more likely.

Im going with Marshall for now, but if Marquis goes back to his usual 2nd half shennanigans,Marshall will be back in no time.

As everyone knows, and Ive been ridiculed for, Id love Hoffpauir back on a permanant basis, but Im thinking they'll probably go for a righty. Much like Murton, Hoffs only hope at major league career is a trade.

If Soriano wasn't close to coming back they might think about adding a RH hitter like Dubois to the 40 man but if he is going to be back right after the all star break it would be a waste to add someone just to sit on the bench for a few games. I agree it will probably be Hoffpauir even though it makes the bench a bit LH heavy. My guess is Hoffpauir in, Marshall (unfortunately) out for now. When Eyre comes back most likely Wuertz goes down since Lou seems to like having two lefties in the pen. When Soriano comes back Hoffpauir goes back down. Even if Marquis struggles Gaudin probably gets a shot at his rotation spot before Marshall with Marquis going to the bullpen unless they can find someone to dump him on. Hendry just doesn't have a history of DFA'ing guys who still have significant money left on their contracts.

I agree, I just hate when a player does everything he can to earn a roster spot, but loses out to a lesser player simply because their already being paid.

Agreed. He'd make a nice insurance policy if *knock on wood* something happen to one of our starters.

ERA is a pretty terrible way to try to value relief pitchers...

In terms of expected wins added (WXRL), here is how the Cubs relievers rank for 2008.

Marmol

Wood

Howry

Lieber

Eyre

Marshall

Ascaino

Cotts

Wuertz

Of course thats only for 2008, so it doesnt necessarily mean thats how they will be in the future. The Cubs would be complete idiots to give up Wuertz this year as Wood, Howry, Lieber, and Eyre will be FAs after this year.
