don't want to start a new thread, mainly because i'm just spit-balling here, but what about Harang? my guess is he's unavailable, but i wonder if the Reds have soured on him because he's struggled (relative to past seasons) this year and he's now 30. He's owed $11 million next year and $12.5 million in 2010 when he becomes a free agent (there is at $12.75 M team option for 2011).

He's pretending that my post in this thread was in any way serious. I think it was pretty clear I was joking, but meh.

Yes there were TT and actually Banedon you were only indirectly related.

Cain and Lincecum are 23 and making $950K and $405K. Don't see the Giants pulling the trigger on that one.

I heard on XM the other day that McGowan (sp?) was stepping down. Maybe that leads to some changes in the front office that make them want to cash in one of those guys for a bunch of ML ready talent. Pie, Murton, Marquis and Marshall plus someone like Veal might be pretty tempting. Admittedly, they might have to put Hill in there instead of Marshall but that would still be OK.

Okay, so one person came up with a package for Lincecum that had Marquis in it, and even then it had multiple qualifiers and also thought to swap Hill in for Marshall. That's far from the "Marquis + minor leaguers = Lincecum" line you were purporting that was apparently mentioned on several occasions.

At the time, Pie, Murton, Marshall and Veal were in the Minors.

Ridiculous was thinking the Giants were ever going to trade Lincecum - especially for what was proposed.

I'm not saying that the Giants would have gone for it, but Murton, Pie and Hill had a lot more trade value before the season started than they do now making the trade idea look worse now than it did when posted.

You're right they wouldn't have gone for it.

At the rate things are going for the Yankees, why not try for Mussina?

mussina is known to be a big east coast guy. his family is in eastern PA and he's never going to play anywhere outside the mid-atlantic states at this stage of his career.

No to Gil Meche, unless the Royals want Marquis in return.

I was actually thinking about that. Marquis would help balance out the salaries for 2009. Then the Royals get out of that deal. I do think it would take quite a bit to get Meche though. Probably a ML ready pitcher (Gallagher/Marshall), a ML ready position player (Pie/Cedeno?) and a young arm with a lot of upside, in addition to Marquis.

We're trying to land a front-line starter down the stretch to help us make the postseason. I am not at all in favor of trading garbage for garbage.

Maybe in the offseason, but not now.

why would we even want mussina?

he's still a pretty solid pitcher. not a top of the rotation guy any more, but he's fine as a #3 or #4.

i wouldn't really be that interested, though, just because i think the cubs need a guy who can slot in behind zambrano in the playoffs, someone like harden or burnett.

He'd be an upgrade in the back end of our rotation and he's a free agent after this season.

He wouldn't provide a 1-2 punch with Zambrano in the playoffs, I'll grant that, but he would definitely win the Cubs a few games that they might not win if Marquis/Gallagher/Marshall is pitching instead.

He helps the bullpen because he does provide 6 IP consistently. This would be welcomed as the season goes on.

He's averaging roughly 5 2/3 this year. Last year as well. Marshall and Gallagher in their careers are averaging right around 5 1/3.

Realistically what would it take to get Rich Harden?

I assume Gallagher would have to be in the package but what other types of guys are we talking about needing to be included?

Let's hope Hendry thinks big and makes a move for Milton Bradley and a frontline starter before the deadline.

I like Bradley, but I'm not sure where he fits unless we plan to move Fukudome to CF. I don't think his knees can hold out in CF any longer.

I wonder if the Jays would do a deal of Marquis + Cedeno + Veal (or comparable prospect) for Burnett + Eckstein.

Eckstein would take Cedeno's place as back-up middle infielder. We'd take on a bad contract in Eckstein, but would unload Marquis's money for next year.

It is really rare to see a trade like this within in the division. Even a team like the Reds who are out of it tend to avoid these.
