how many of you will be pretty upset if we can't get a frontline starter at the deadline?

i know i will be

And furthermore, how many of you are sick of all these high gas prices?

Not me...I always feel it's a luxury if you can add a piece at the deadline. You're just never sure if the right person for your team is out there, if they're available, if the other team wants your prospects, if the other team is out of the race, and if the price is right. That's so many ifs that have to be dealt with that I'm just thankful any year that some piece is able to be added.

I won't be upset unless it's the Cardinals or Brewers who add the frontline starter instead of us. If Sabathia or Harden or Burnett isn't traded or go somewhere like the Yankees, I'll just shrug my shoulders and wish it had been us.

If one of those players goes to the Brewers or Cardinals, then damn, I'm going to be ticked if we don't get one for ourselves.

His name has been mentioned briefly and in passing, but Gil Meche could be a good sleeper pickup. He has an ERA barely over 2 in his last 4 starts, with a WHIP under 0.75. His ERA in in the mid 3's after a horrid start to the season. Looking at his salary page, it looks like he's owed about 36Mil over the next 3 years. Similar to what the Cubs would have to pay Burnett, but for an extra year....which is evened out by the fact that Meche is 2 years younger.

He's also a former Hendry target. Intriguing possibility...

Gil Meche is another guy we could probably get for almost nothing. And he's a big upgrade over Marquis and Gallagher, IMO.

No to Gil Meche, unless the Royals want Marquis in return.

I was actually thinking about that. Marquis would help balance out the salaries for 2009. Then the Royals get out of that deal. I do think it would take quite a bit to get Meche though. Probably a ML ready pitcher (Gallagher/Marshall), a ML ready position player (Pie/Cedeno?) and a young arm with a lot of upside, in addition to Marquis.

Marshall or Gallagher, and Pie or Cedeno, and Marquis for Meche? Are you advocating that? That seems like a horrible trade for us.

given the long-term contracts the cubs already have, i really don't want them getting involved with another 3 years and $35M of gil meche. he hasn't been good this year, either.

Yes, this. I'm just happy the Cubs are going to be buyers instead of unloading players for the eternal "wait 'til next year."

Maddux sounds cool, but he's just not a good option unless he could be had for pretty much nothing. If they could acquire Maddux and a frontline starter, sure, go for it.

Z

Sabathia

Dempster

Lilly

Maddux

That would be one hell of a starting rotation...I don't know if Hendry can get it done. He would have to empty out the entire minor leagues, but I'm crossing my fingers that he can make it happen.

I have no idea where the notion that KC would give Meche away cheaply is coming from.

Since they signed him, he's given them basically exactly what they hoped he would... he's made all his starts, eaten innings, and put up an ERA in the 4.00 range with good peripherals. He's the steady veteran in a young and inexperienced rotation.

I'd say you'd have to come with a serious package just to get KC's attention. The guy's pretty valuable for where they are right now.

It'd be even better without Maddux, IMO.

Meh. Why waste time and prospects with/for relievers? Not a big deal, but still.

And I am not enamored with Fuentes' peripherals this season.

Agreed. I am sure they also are hoping for a TB similar resurrgence next year with the group of young talent they have currently. I don't think they will dump Meche just to do so. He is currently earning his contract in their eyes.
