The CUBS are 7-10 versus teams with winning records, and 38-17 aginst losing teams. The good news is they are beating the teams they should beat, which is something the CUBS have always had trouble with in the past. In six series against winning teams the CUBS have won one, the sweep of the D-backs who look less than spectacular now. Does this worry anybody? Discuss

No. It doesn't worry me. They are saving the wins against the good teams for the playoffs and beyond. This is a good strategy. Don't show the teams you will potentially be playing in the more meaningful game all of your cards. :P

I love the optomism. I know this is what good teams do, but come playoff time they have to beat these teams. Hendry will most likely make a deal before the trade deadline for another pitcher. One thing is certain, the CUBS will probably have an improved roster for a run at the pennant.

This is what good teams do. They play 500 against good teams and beat up on everyone else. Also, what would the Pirates record be if the Cubs hadn't hammered them almost everytime they play?

This (again)

The playoffs will be won by whoever gets hot at the right time. Trying to build a team to win for the playoffs is nearly an impossible strategy. Build the best team for 162 and then hope to play your best in the short series come October.

If the Mets and Braves win today, then the Cubs are 12-10 against teams .500 or better. Not an issue for me.

Exactly. And look at the discrepancy in the over vs. under .500 teams the Cubs have played. Rather do better vs. lesser competition, simply because there is more of it.

By my quick count, the Red Sox were 3 games over against teams over 500 last year.

Cardinals in '06: 5 games under.

White Sox in '05: 6 games over.

Your record against winning teams has little to do with your playoff abilities.

Absolutely....This has been my feeling for a while now. Just look at how successful the wild card teams have been in past years. It's because they had to fight down to the wire playing great baseball just to make the playoffs and oftentimes there is a carryover effect. Heck, our team last year could have easily made it to the World Series with that lineup if we had 2 guys get hot at the right time. I believe we have the team to win the division right now, but our focus needs to be acquiring 1-2 pitching pieces that will fill key positions come playoff time.
