that is amazing, no other golfer on the planet can make a 12 foot putt.

Doesn't it suck sometimes to be so cynical?

actually no. it makes it a lot easier to laugh at golf announcers who say "tiger didn't have his a-game today, but that's why he is so great, he sticks with it." as if the other golfers say "you know what, i'm just not at the top of my game today" and walk off the course to have a drink in the clubhouse. he's a great golfer but if you watch a full round of his, you hear praise heaped on him that is utterly absurd.

Eh, but that's how it was with MJ, and that's how it'll be with the next great player in their sport.

that was insane. he really is MJ in golf clothes

No, he isn't. I think the better comparison would be to Shaq. THE most dominant player in the game, but with a huge hole in his game. Shaq's was the free throw line, Tiger's is apparently the tee box. Very erratic (seriously, no way he's hit 50% of his fairways), but still the best player out there... by a large margin.

Tiger is the personification of the old saying "drive for show, putt for dough."

But, my Lord, if he ever puts together a tourney where he hits 80% of his fairways, he laps the field again.

Tiger has the titles that go along with the play though...so he's much more MJ than Shaq in that way. And MJ and Tiger are all skill...Shaq was just born into a freakishly huge body...he doesn't do much that another person with the same body shape couldn't do. Tiger and MJ can/could both do things that people with the same body type couldn't do.

And Tiger can do things from the tee box that Shaq can't do from the free throw line. Tiger misses fairways, sure. But he makes up for the inaccuracy with distance. He can get to par 5 greens in 2 that nobody else in the field can.

A big, fat, oooooook to the Shaq comparison. John Daly is shaq. Tiger is MJ, the most dominant, willed, competitive player in his sport.

"John Daly is Shaq" is perhaps the singularly dumbest thing ever written on this, or any other, forum. John Daly is George Muresan.

Tiger is not the MJ of Golf. Until he catches Jack, he is at best Kobe Bryant. Jordan was a smarter player than Tiger is. Jordan did not pass up wide open layups for 25 footers. Jordan did not have such a glaring weakness in his game as Tiger does. The MJ comparison is pure bull turd.

Tiger is clutch as can be. Excellent putter. Tremendous with short irons. Makes shots that no one else on the planet can.

Tiger is clearly not a great decision maker, and is pretty weak from the tee box, though. And those are glaring holes in his game.

Tiger tees off like MJ shot 3s. Jordan had a weakness but he got past it by being much better than everyone else at everything else.

George Muresean was terrible at everything about basketball. He was tall, the end. When Daly wasn't drunk and hungover and more concerned with gambling than golf, he actually won a couple of majors. He had one glaring strength to his game - power. Guess who that sounds like?

For his career, Jordan shot 33% from 3. That is not a "weakness". That is actually not a bad percentage.

Tiger has hit less than 60% of his fairways. In 2006, he finished 139th on Tour. In 2007, he finished 152nd. In 2008, he isn't even in the top 200.

Tiger tees off like MJ hit curve balls. Now THAT would be accurate.

33% is Devean George. MJ had Devean George's three-point game. He shot 3s like Keith Bogans. What a strength.

Who cares if you hit less than 60% of your fairways if you hit 78% greens in regulation?

Golf stats are kindo of jacked. If you hit all your GIR that stat will look good but you putts stats will probably look bad. The pros are so good that if they are off the green(sand, fringe, whatever) they can get it close enough to 1 putt, thus making it sound like your putts are low, but when you are off the green getting it in the hole is less likely. So sometimes its better to have 2 putts than 1 putt because at least you have a better shot at a birdie. Median or average putts might be an interesting stat if they kept track of that stuff. Some other putting stat besides 'putts'.

people that yell things at golf events are beyond lame.

people who yell "get in the hole!!!" when a guy is teeing off on a par 4 or par 5 should be immediately ejected from the course, or at least subject to a cattle prod.

When Tiger can sink a 12 foot putt with a backdrop of people waving and screaming, then we can start comparing him to MJ.

Sinking a 12 foot putt, especially at a major, is a hell of a lot harder than shooting a free throw.

Exactly. With a free throw, no matter where you're playing, the basket is always the same height and the same distance from the person shooting. And while there may be screaming fans, it's still the same shot you've taken over and over and over again.
