Gallagher, meanwhile, is showing progress in the Cubs' rotation and drawing raves from new teammate Jim Edmonds.

"He's the first guy I've seen in a while with Carpenter stuff," Edmonds says, referring to his former Cardinals teammate, Chris Carpenter.

Lou thinking about skipping Gallagher next start.

Rotation gyration?

With a day off on the schedule today and a pitcher's day off coming a week later, Piniella is considering skipping rookie Sean Gallagher in the rotation as part of a five-week plan to get his top starters more starts.

Piniella said he and Rothschild have a preliminary plan that takes advantage of days off to get Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster and Ted Lilly seven starts each before the All-Star break, with the fourth and fifth spots getting six each.

That could mean having Zambrano pitch Thursday in Gallagher's slot, following Lilly and Dempster.

Whew...I thought he was going to have Marquis pitch an extra time too, good to know he's getting bumped as well. I think this will be a good thing for Sean.

Given the choice, I'd rather they skip Dempster. He hasn't thrown this many innings in years.

Also, I like the compliment from Edmonds, but at the same time wonder how much of a difference in stuff he can tell from center field. He's been out there in every one of Gallagher's starts except two, and one of those he wasn't on the team yet.

I assume he's observing him more than just during the game when he's in center field.

Is he going to the bullpen and catching his third day side session then? Either way, it's definitely a nice compliment, I just thought it might need to be tempered a bit given it didn't come from someone on the coaching staff or one of the catchers.

Problem with skipping Demp would make him concious of it and weigh on his mind. A "I'm doing so well why did they skip me when my arm is doing fine" thing. When a guy is doing well I will always say do everything you can to not throw him for a loop and just keep treating him the same.

or... and here's a crazy idea... the idea could be thrown out there that he was being skipped to ensure he stays fresh because he hasn't been a full-time starter in a few years

try looking at it from a player's perspective. A player will except it but the competiveness in him will have him thinking my arm feels fine and I'm dominanting why do I have to be skipped. I know what is best for my arm.

Like I said if someone is doing well don't mess with him. Don't fix what isn't broken.

Good grief, it's not like Dempster shows up to the ballpark thinking it's his day to start and then suddenly finds someone else's name in the lineup card. You tell him that he's been a huge asset to the rotation thus far, and that you want to keep it that way. So, since he hasn't thrown this many innings in a long time, and that can lead to injury or a dead arm, he's getting skipped by this off day to ensure he's still this great come September. That's easy to take from the player's perspective.

it still changes his routine and any player will have a voice in the back of their head wanting to start and compete

Yep...and a lot of guys look good on the side and then lose it on the mound.

Ever get the feeling that these we're assuming pro athletes have the reasoning abilities of a 2nd grader? Dempster can't accept an off day, Soriano must lead-off or he'll fail, Sosa can't change his spot in the lineup or in the batters' box, "Closer's mentality," etc.

Obviously, players are a superstitious, routine-oriented bunch of guys, but are we not giving them enough credit as rational people?

There may also be performance incentives in veteran contracts that aren't present in rookie contracts like Gallagher's.

I don't know the terms of their contracts, but missing a couple of starts over the course of the season *might* cost Zambrano, Dempster or Lilly some cash.

Gallagher, meanwhile, is showing progress in the Cubs' rotation and drawing raves from new teammate Jim Edmonds.

Gallagher doesn't have the 12-6 curveball that Carpenter has does he?

i have been impressed with gallagher's stuff lately. i thought it might be kinda fringy for a major leaguer but he looks really solid. if he tightens his command just a bit as he matures, he definitely has a place as a #2/3 starter in the big leagues.

Haha. Gay joke.

I agree with TT. I'd like to find a way to keep Demp fresh.

I also don't see the comparison Edmonds is making. Carp's stuff has looked infinitely sharper than Sean's, though I've only seen Sean pitch twice.

Couple things about moving up Zambrano to Thursday. It would keep the bat in his hands. His regular turn would be Friday in an AL park, meaning Cubs would DH and Zambrano would not hit, possibly taking a huge advantage away from the Cubs (Z's bat better than his opponent's bat in the 9-hole). He'll have to pitch in 2 DH games anyway, might as well split them up so he doesn't go over 2 weeks without an AB. Also, there are off days next Monday (Hall of Fame exhibition) and the Monday after. The scheduled could be tweaked there also. And if anyone thinks the White Sox games are important, if you use the regular 5-man rotation from here to the break, Zambrano misses both Sox series. Also, you don't want to keep him on 4-days rest (skipping a starter for each off Monday) because then he will miss the Cards series.

I could see vs. Atl

10- Lilly (vs. ATL)

11- Dempster (vs. ATL)

12- Zambrano (vs. ATL)

13- Marquis (at TOR) on regular rest

14- Gallagher (at TOR) vs. Halladay, poor kid.

15- Lilly (at TOR)

16- OFF DAY

17- Dempster (at TB)

18- Zambrano (at TB)

19- Marquis (at TB)

20- Lilly (vs. CWS)

21- Gallagher (vs. CWS)

22- Dempster (vs. CWS)

23- OFF Day

24- Zambrano (vs. BAL)

25- Lilly (vs. BAL)

26- Marquis (vs. BAL)

27- Dempster (at CWS)

28- Gallagher (at CWS)-- maybe Rich Hill here if he's ready.

29- Zambrano (at CWS)

30- Lilly (at SF)

1- Marquis (at SF)

2- Dempster (at SF)

3- Gallagher (at SF)

4- Zambrano (at StL)

This way gets Zambrano vs. the best teams. Vs. Atlanta over Toronto. White Sox/Cards over San Francisco. Gets Gallagher vs. a weak SF lineup and out of the Cards series.

I wouldn't be surprised if Marshall or Hill start the Hall of Fame game on the 16th, or if they both pitch that game so that the coaching staff can see them again.

Edmonds plays a shallow CF. Maybe that's how he could see the pitcher's stuff. . . . .no pun intended.
