I think the wife and I will travel to Jackson to see Jeff pitch. Hopefully the team will look better than they did when I saw them in Montgomery.

I'll give my very ammeter scouting report.

Peoria is tied 6-6 at the 7th inning stretch. Billy Muldowney had horrid control as he surrendered 5 walks (doubling his season total!) and a HBP in 3 short innings. Marquez Smith hit his 8th HR of the season and 4th in 6 games.

Should Smith be a little more on the radar? He put up pretty good numbers last year, and has put up good numbers again this year. I know he's a 23 year old in A ball, which isn't good, but he's also only in his first full year of professional baseball. I'm not sure what his defense is like, but he really should be promoted at mid-season.

He's gotten some time at 2B this season (and they really pushed him there during instructs). If Smith can play second, I think he could be a significant prospect.

For the Cubs, sticking at second is the only requirement to being viewed as a significant prospect.

AZ Phil at Fitch:

  • Josh Vitters went 3/4 with a double, triple, a walk and a strikeout but committed a throwing error.
  • Kyler Burke went 3/4 with a double, a walk and a strikeout.
  • Carlos Perez went 4/4 but they were all singles.
  • Drew Rundle went 2/3.
  • Kevin Soto went 2/3 with a triple and a strikeout.
  • But this was all against Team China which has awful pitching.
  • Chris Huseby went 1 IP and struggled with his control yet again (despite not throwing many FBs - which are his toughest to control pitch) - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP (20 pitches - 8 strikes, 12 balls).
  • Oneri Fleita was at the game.

Time to begin preparing Samardzija's HOF bust.

6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 5/0 K/BB

Next season, after his first bad start, the Cubs should promptly demote him to the pen.

Very very nice to see Shark pitch well tonight. I've grown much less enamored of him as a prospect this season but it goes without saying that I would love nothing more than to see him end up being a good pitcher for the Cubs.

We got to the game in the top of the 2nd inning. They didn't have a radar gun but Sam. had a pretty good but also pretty straight fastball. In hitter's counts they were sitting on and hitting the fastball well, but at people. Fuld made a real nice catch in CF and Camps made a great play at SS. However, his breaking ball (splitter?) was outstanding. He struck out all 5 batters on breaking pitches in the dirt. He seemed to tire in the 5th but powered his way through it.

I don't know how much talent was on display for the D-Jaxxs but Sam. pretty much dominated them last night. I was impressed if that means anything (and I know it does not).
