To start on Thursday. I'm not real sure I agree with this one, I would have went with Matt Maloney or Daryl Thompson, but the youth movement continues.

If the kid is supposed to be phenomenal why not give him his chance to shine. Going to an old vet who may be slightly better won't get them into the race but calling up a young phenom who could dominate might give them a chance. There only chance.

I wonder if the call up of Homer Bailey was based on how well Jay Bruce have been playing. I know Bailey was in the majors last yr, but with the way Bruce is playing, I wonder if the Reds are hoping to continue to feed off that momentum by bringing up a very talented young arm. I mean if everything goes to plan, a rotation of Harang/Arroyo/Volquez/Cuerto/Bailey can keep the Reds in the race (atleast the Wild Card) for a very long time.

If there is one team that is getting close to being "more then an annoyance" it is the Reds. But on the flip side, they do have Dusty as their manager, and he will managed them out of the race.

How are they an annoyance? They're not very good and they are 8 games back. They aren't a team to even think about in this race.

Because everyone wants to not mention the 900lb elephant in the room. The Cardinals are the main comp. We are on fire right now and they are sitll within striking distance.

or it could be that most people realize that the cardinals' players aren't very good.

We're pretty far past the point in the season where current record has some decent predictive value.

that's fine, but the cubs are leading the cardinals, have a better team on paper than the cardinals, aren't relying on massive achievers to keep winning, have played a tougher schedule (or, the cards have played a very easy schedule), and are 6.5 games better in pythagorean W-L. there is no reason to think the cards might be better, other than complete luck.

Or you could say that the Cards have been playing way over their head and they are still 2.5 games back. Probably their only hope was to do like the Brewers did last year and get way out ahead and hope they could play well enough in the second half to hold on. Unfortunately for Cardinals the Cubs did not take 6 weeks to get it going like they did last season.

He's not even dominating in AAA though.

I agree with you on the veteran thing and I would rather see anybody but Fogg, but the Reds have two young pitchers in AAA who I think deserved a callup more than Bailey did.

Oh....IDK, how about the fact that Dunn has literally owned the Cubs since forever. Harang has pitched well against the Cubs. And they have enough talent to win games against the Cubs. Don't know about you, but as a fan, every time the Cubs play the Reds (home or away) I have the uneasy feeling in that series. The Reds have notoriously play the Cubs tough.

Just because there are 8 games back, don't mean they can' thave an impact on the Cubs season.

If the Nati can get good value for Griffey and Dunn, they could be a really good team for a long time.

Rotation of Harang, Cueto, Volquez, Bailey, Maloney gives them a proven ace (or just below) caliber pitcher, Bailey has ACE potential. Volquez and Cueto are potential good 2-3 starters.

Lineup of Bruce, Phillips, and Votto in the middle, surrounded by guys like Keppinger, Encarnacion and they have prospects in their top 10 that can fill out the rest of that lineup, not to mention the money they will be able to spend with all the cheap talent they have.

I fear the Reds in a few years, Dusty be damned.

Even if they hold on to Dunn, a 3-4-5 of Votto, Bruce, Dunn is deadly, and that rotation is similar to the one we had in 2004. The Reds could be really good for a really long time. They could accelerate the process if they would get a manager who knows what he's doing.

I don't think it can compete with what our rotation was suppose to be. Wood, Prior, and Zambrano were all HOF potential pitchers, then followed by Maddux and Clement. What a gigantic disappointment that year was.

The Reds could be scary in a few years, but it's still a lot of things that have to happen at once. And Dusty is obviously not the guy to lead a young squad.

Exactly. People said that about us in 03.

That worked out well.
