Let's assume for the moment the Dodgers fall out of contention (and it looks like they might) and put Lowe on the market. In those years he pitched 222, 218, and 199.1 innings. He's a workhorse, he gets ground balls, and he maintains a K:BB ratio between 2:1 and 3:1 pretty consistently. That said, he's 35 and having a pretty rough year so far.

I've been wanting Lowe on the Cubs for a long time. What do you guys think it would take? A package with some combination of Ceda, Marshall, Gallagher, and Cedeno perhaps? Certainly not someone like Pie.

I'm all in favor of the idea, but that seems way high for a 2-month rental.

Gallagher alone would be debateable.

Thats a good name that I hadn't thought of.

That said, Dodgers will do everything it takes to win right now. They are good enough to stay within like 3-4 games of first place until the deadline. If that's the case, they won't sell.

Are they though? We've seen what the Diamondbacks can do, and it's quite a bit. I didn't buy into the Dodgers hype during the preseason and it makes even less sense now. The offense isn't very good even when it's healthy. The pitching staff is good, but not outstanding. I think they could easily fall quite a ways behind Arizona by the trading deadline.

Some combination of the four, not all four. What about Ceda and Cedeno?

If Theriot was still producing by the time the deadline comes around, I'd be in favor of considering such a move. But, his numbers have begun to decline of late, and this offense may not be able to withstand the same non-existent production they got from CF and SS last season, especially if Soto falls back at all. Plus, you will have traded the guy in the organization most capable of filling the SS spot for 2009, while acquiring a late 30's pitcher who will be a free agent, and who hasn't been all that special either. I'd rather see if they'd have interest in Murton or some other position player who is redundent to the Cubs, like Patterson.

I would agree. Trading Cedeno doesn't seem like a very good idea. He's a quality backup who has a pretty good amount of at-bats off the bench, and then you add in the fact that he still has a good shot to become a starter in the next year and a half. I don't think the Dodgers would want him anyway though, considering they have both Furcal and Hu.

The Dodgers have a ton of young players, they can picky in choosing who they want.

Just FWIW...this was from a Gammons article published yesterday (http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=gammons_peter):

Some pitchers who could be available between now and the trading deadline: Paul Byrd; maybe Jeremy Sowers if the right bat were available in return; Derek Lowe; Rich Harden; Odalis Perez; Brett Tomko; Jarrod Washburn; Zach Duke; Vicente Padilla; and Kevin Millwood, if the money could be worked out.

He continued with some "possible, but unlikely" scenarios like AJ Burnett, Ben Sheets, etc. So the fact that Lowe is in the list that has no "if they fall out of the race" or "if they get the right player" caveats makes me think he's pretty available.

How quickly we all forget that the Dodgers gave the Cubs Cesar Izcrapius for Greg Maddux.

And we want to send 4 young guys for Derek Lowe?

Reed Johnson seems fair.

Martin, Furcal, Laroche, Loney, Either, Kemp, Pierre, Kent is not a bad offense by any stretch.

Billingsley, Penny, Kuroda, Lowe, Kershaw, Kuo is a solid rotation.

I can definitely see them staying in the race, even if they do choose to try and move Lowe.

The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of getting Vicente Padilla and Milton Bradley from Texas in exchange for 1 of Pie/Patterson, Murton, Marquis, and Marshall/Gallagher. Padilla makes more than Marquis and his deal is 1 year longer so the Rangers would be saving quite a bit of money. It might not take that much to get this deal done.

Padilla is by no means a sure thing to be a #2 starter, but he may well be among the best available. If the Cubs feel Bradley can still play CF, then that problem is solved. Bradley has been a solid, consistent, though not spectacular hitter his whole career. He also is a switch hitter who doesn't have ridiculously imbalanced splits, a rarity in today's game.

Who honestly believes Bradley can still play CF? I don't. He's about as brittle as any player who stepped onto a major league playing surface.

He has been spending equal time at DH and LF because they don't trust his surgically repaired knee.

I like what Bradley brings to the plate. But, if the Cubs were to pick him up, Fukudome or Soriano will have to shift to CF. That's a fact.
