Reds optioned OF Corey Patterson to Triple-A Louisville.

The team decided that the best way to make sure that Dusty Baker didn't play Patterson over Jay Bruce was to take the toy away. He hit .200 with 4 homers and 8 eight stolen bases in 45 games for the Reds.

Reds selected the contract of INF Andy Phillips from Triple-A Louisville

Phillips was hitting .315 with five homers and 22 RBI in 40 games at Louisville. He's ultimately replacing Scott Hatteberg on the roster, and will backup Joey Votto.

I didn't realize he even still had any options remaining. Too bad Hendry didn't think of that idea (take Dusty's toys away from him).

Bad Dusty! I'm taking away your toys until you learn how to manage. Now go to your office and think about what you've done.

In a vaccuum, the Reds chose the worst of the 3 options to have on the big league roster(Patterson, Hatteberg, Phillips)

Even with Dusty, keeping Hatteberg was the better option.

Patterson was demoted (with DuBois) once when Murton and Greenberg got called up.

And Hendry kept giving Dusty MORE toys.

Dusty was an idiot, sure, but Hendry was just as much to blame for Neifi, Macias, Izturis, Patterson, Bynum, Ordonez, etc.

Bynum brought us a pretty good pitcher. Kudos to Hendry on that one!

Kevin Hart for John Koronka, basically, because I believe we traded Koronka for Bynum. Good trade(s).

So who's Dusty's new favorite in Cincy now?

Looks like it's starting to be Johnny Cueto, he threw 114 and 119 pitches his last two starts, both over the course of 5 innings.

KEEP WORKING THAT ARM, DUSTY!!!

I certainly gained a lot of respect for Corey Patterson after learning this.

Dusty Baker said Corey Patterson came to him yesterday and volunteered to go Triple-A.

"It was a mutual decision," Baker said. "I was going to call Corey in and talk to him. He came in before I called him in. He said, 'I got to get my act together. I've got to change some things.' He knows he's better than he played. He's still got the skill, the talent. He's still only 28 years old. It's good move to go down, stay a while and get his stuff together."

It sounds like there's mechanical problems with Patterson's swing. "No. 1, he's got to get on that fastball and eliminate some steps. Basically, hitting is liek a two-step process. He had a third and fourth step in there."

I swear Koronka went the year before. Bynum we got from the A's and Koronka went to Texas. Can someone put this together for us?

The trade that sent Koronka to Texas and brought Bynum to the Cubs was a very late spring training trade (as in the day before the regular season started, I think) in 2006.

Following the 2006 season, Bynum was traded to Baltimore for Kevin Hart. Two separate transactions, but the net result was essentially Koronka for Hart.

It was actually a three-team trade between the Cubs, A's, and Rangers. The Cubs sent Koronko and a PTBNL (later settled in cash) to the Rangers. The Rangers sent Juan Dominguez to the A's. And the A's sent John Reinecker to the Rangers and Bynum to the Cubs. You're right about it being very late in Spring Training; it was March 31.

It was a late ST 3-team trade. We got Bynum, the Ranhgers got Koronka, and the A's got some minor league pitcher I beleive.

I must say I'm an Andy Phillips fan without a valid reason. He's also the definition of a AAAA player.

That sounds suspiciously like what Dusty said when Sammy Sosa "volunteered" to move down in the lineup after people had been screaming for it for weeks in 04. It's his way of protecting his players, letting them save face when they have no choice. I imagine it's one of the reasons he's considered a "player's manager".

That, or Patterson knew he'd have no chance to play with Bruce around. Either way, it's not all that impressive, IMO. Prediction: When Jr. finally moves down in the lineup, that'll be due to his team player selflessness, too.

that can't be true, corey is a lazy bum who doesn't care enough to improve his approach at the plate and become a better player.

Good point.

Because after being the third overall pick 10 years ago, Corey will now view this trip to AAA as the sign that he must change his approach to hitting. The light bulb will now go on and he will become the "five-tool" player that the Cubs were waiting for.

I say he goes "Willie Mays" from here on out.
