It didn't happen at Wrigley, but Albert Belle once gave me the middle finger.

That's nothing. I egged his house one Halloween and he ended up hitting me with his car.

I heard on the radio that Soriano ran to the Cubs BP to make a catch. Was it as great as Santo made it sound? Was Soriano running better?

It wasn't an exceptional play, but it was a very good play. Soriano was running pretty hard, caught the ball (evading two fans leaning over the railing trying to catch it) and slammed up against the side wall.

That's pretty much what I thought seeing as how it wasn't a web gem nominee  but it's nice to see Soriano running hard.

Maybe brenly's comments will motivate him

Soriano's late inning defense has cost this team either certain wins or broken ties 3 times since he came off the DL. The criticism was easily valid. When you hold your breath every time a ball is hit to LF, some light-hearted ribbing is warranted.

Then he gave the fans a dirty look for reaching into the field to try to catch the ball.

I'd like to think fans sitting in that area might exercise a little restraint on a ball hit near that wall considering what once happened on a foul ball hit to that same general area back in 2003.

Maybe, but they're fans at a baseball game and many people in those seats really want a foul ball (or to have a fielder toss one to them). When the situation presents itself, many people aren't thinking "is this in play or out of Soriano's reach" they're just thinking "FOUL BALL!"

yeah, looking at the replay it appeared as though one of them started pulling his glove back a bit when he realized where he was

Ken Griffey Jr. once stopped at the top of the dugout asked me to repeat myself and called me a fat f&^k! Needless to say my "inappropriate" heckling continued.

My only game in the bleachers was a 2004 game against the Marlins. During batting practice, Brad Penny was in the OF shagging fly balls or jogging or whatever and some fans were giving it to him good. He turned around and gave it right back. It was awesome.

In general, heckling is annoying though. In that game, Juan Encarnacion was the Marlins RF and this fan about 10 people to my left was yelling at him all the time. His jokes were funny in the 1st inning. They were redundant in the 3rd. By the 5th, everyone wanted to punch him in the face.

For the record, that thing in the tribune about automatic ejection is incorrect.

Our boss was livid that that somehow made it in there.

Yeah, I can see Mike getting pretty steamed about that but for some reason I suspect it was Carl who blew his fuse.

The whole article has some signs for hope:
Does Brenly at all regret the "dart" comment?

"Part of my job is to entertain up here," he replied. "I thought it was a funny line. I'm sure some people probably took it the wrong way. I could've said the same thing and worded it a little differently, but I think everybody got the gist of what I was saying."

The criticism was warranted; the cheap shot was not. His point was well-made without the sophmoric "dart" comment.

With respect to his running, I have noticed that he is loafing-it around the bases (at least relative to what he looks like at full strength). But are we really criticizing him for being hurt?

It cracks me up that the fans are allowing the media to make an issue out of something that is nothing. Fans feed into everything the media writes when all they are trying to do is sell papers.

Cracks me up even further that there is such a problem among fans when Steve Stone said far worse things on a regular basis in 04 and many of you defended him and continue to do so until this day.

oh, i bet randy was pissed.

Doubt it, he works in the mail room.

I know you are being a smartass but I also know that Roast will know exactly who I am talking about.

I know that from his posts. He is obviously a seasonal stadium employee. Only knew the supervisors (since they are full timers) and a handful of the older ushers who work behind home plate. Too many seasonal stadium employees and turnover for any of us to get to know them.

Oh thats nice. You full timers can just stay up in your ivory towers and never give the little guys like Roast who are down bleeding in the trenches a second thought. Yet Randy in the mail room is somehow memorable and important enough for you to remember his name and position.

I had a similar experience with Brad Penny. I was in the bleachers at Dodger Stadium for a Cubs game which Penny was starting, and some Cubs fans nearby started heckling him. He just turned to them and said, loud and clear, "thanks for my World Series ring."

Yeah, it hurt, even as a bystander, but it was pretty funny.
