Has anyone thought about putting a ticket forum up? The only rule would be, they have to be sold at face value.

The reason that I ask is that I'm coming home from the Middle East in June and my daughter and I are considering going up to Chicago from Little Rock to catch a game sometime there after. Neither of us have ever been to Wrigley but it looks like all the weekend games are sold out and we can't hit a game during the week. If any of you have any tickets for sale, let me know and I might be interested. Thanks.

I think it would be a good idea. I don't know why they would have to be sold at face value though. If it's a big game and the street/ebay/stub hub prices are at least $20 over face and someone is willing to sell them on here for $5-10 over face it's still a good deal.

I understand not wanting to have sharks coming here solely for that purpose but I think they would generally be ignored if there wasn't interest.

I think it would be a good idea as well. I am always looking for tickets around face value, and I wouldn't mind putting some that I can't make up on the board if I could get a fair trade for other tickets to games that I could make.

When you talk about reselling a ticket for more than face value (plus a nominal carrying charge), there are legal issues involved. There are issues regarding licensing to broker tickets, sales tax may also come into play, and then there is the liability involved in providing a public forum for this activity to take place. Perhaps one of our resident legal experts could shed some light on these and any other issues that might be involved ?

That's a slippery slope, eventually a scalper is going to try and marry his own tickets and then it'll be anarchy.

For any event in Illinois, regardless of whether or not the buyer and/or seller lives in Illinois, tickets can be sold legally for above face value. Whether or not that should apply to the proposed forum is another issue. Tim may very well not want tickets to be sold above face value for other reasons.

It might be possible to hide the forum from non-registered users to prevent people from making first-post ticket offers.

The purpose of them being face value is one, I'm in Arkansas, so I don't know the Illinois law, but two is so that true Cubs fans can get to the game and support the team without spending an arm and a leg.

All true Cubs fans went online and purchased tickets the day they went on sale.

Actually, I'm just picking on you because I hate the whole idea of "true" fans, or the insinuation that those who end up paying more than face are not "true" fans. You're trying to purchase a product at less than the market rate. That's perfectly fine, and wise. But don't try and couch it as some noble cause of true fans.

If there's a limit on tickets only being sold for face value, I think you will end up with lots of people looking and very few people selling. The only people selling would be those who either are selling at the last minute or season ticket holders looking to unload tickets to the less popular games. Occasionally, when we have seasons like 2006, you might find people unloading tickets to games they bought but then have grown disgusted of the team.

But people who paid for tickets in advance that they could make 15-50 bucks over face aren't usually so noble to sell them for face when they have other options.

We don't seem to have that problem on the Razorbacks message board that I frequent. The law in Arkansas is no scalping, so the rule on the board is face value or below, no exceptions. That being said, we still have people that can't make games or just don't feel like going that are able to sell their tickets quickly. I have no problem paying over face value as long as I'm not getting shafted (30 dollars over face for two USC (west)/Arkansas football tickets were more than reasonable).

The whole "true fan" thing wasn't meant in the context that it was taken. What was meant, is that this would provide you a way to jettison your tickets to someone that really wanted them for a reasonable price and the transaction could be done quickly. On the contrary, with the laws being as they seem to be in Chicago, this would also open up an avenue for someone to buy up the tickets here at face and sell them somewhere else for a profit, which I wouldn't care to see.

Wouldn't somebody who is willing to pay above face be described as somebody who really wanted them?

Sounds like it to me.

legal to scalp above face value? tell that to the cops outside Wrigley. oh, right, they're just shooing you away so you don't steal business from the Cubs' scalping their own tickets

Basically. It's illegal to scalp on around wrigley, just like it's illegal to have an open alcoholic beverage on the streets around wrigley. They have a special agreement with the City or something.

I just logged on here to see if NSBB had such a forum. So I'm in favor of it. Not that anyone this time of year would be looking to unload their tickets for anything short of a king's ransom.

But if they are, I want to come up for one of the precious few remaining weekend games!

I too came across this message board while looking for ticket advice. I think it would be a great idea to have a non-scalping forum where fans can help each other. I live in North Carolina and found tickets to a Duke game on a Duke message board that I frequent. The ticket forum there works great and I was able to see Duke for $40.
