So that is why bunting is stupid

No, that is why sacrifice bunts that aren't executed well are stupid.

no, bunting with your #2 hitter is stupid. or, having a #2 hitter who you'd rather bunt with in that situation is stupid.

That makes no sense. Bunting with your #2 hitter - essentially trying to put 2 runners in scoring position for your 2 best hitters is stupid knowing full well this game may be called very soon?

http://www.tangotiger.net/RE9902.html

Slightly more runs expected with runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs than runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.

plus that assumes that the bunt is executed properly. there's a much better chance of a failed bunt that results in a double play, pop out or fielder's choice than there is of a throw into the stands or theriot beating the ball to first. so actually the decision to bunt is going to cost you even more than that very small amount.

It's not that hard people. The only positive from a sac bunt when everyone knows a sac bunt is coming and the defense doesn't botch it is moving runners over and getting an out. There are several positives if you actually try to get a hit, which is what hitters are used to doing in every single AB.

And many positives come from a PROPERLY executed sacrifice bunt. A fly ball ties the game and a bloop single wins it. Considering the weather and circumstances, it was a good decision but poor execution.

You're not doing a good job of looking at the alternatives. If theriot swings, there's a significant chance he gets a hit or walk (more than a third!) and does better than the sac. There's another 1/3 or more chance that he drives at least marquis to third while making an out, basically the same as a successful sac. There's a small chance he gets an out and no movement, and a very small chance of a dp.

Meredith has allowed a .566 OPS vs. RHB in his career and a .760 OPS against lefties.

Johnson has a .708 OPS vs. RHP in his career and a .823 OPS vs. lefties.

So what we were looking at is a right handed hitter who is terrible against right handers... a right handed pitcher who shuts down right handers... and Lou successfully manages to not put Pie in again. It's like an Olympic event for him.

all joking aside, Jason Marquis has been given way too many chances. Hes a horrible pitcher. hes made it clear that he doesnt want to move to the pen, suggesting hed do a lousy job there, and Cotts and Ascenio deserve shots over him.

There are teams out there who would have some interest in a guy capable of eating a lot of innings. Wed probably have to eat a lot of salary, but if thats the way it has to be, than thats the way it has to be.

Or let Ward hit. Anybody but Johnson.

And for anyone with a BP subscription, here's an article on bunting in close and late situations:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=2869

When runners are on first and second, sacrificing is, again, not a good idea, a finding that is due almost entirely to the opposing manager’s propensity to intentionally walk the next batter to keep the double play in order. This 10% decrease (approximately) in the scoring probability of the situation is enough to reduce the threshold across a great deal of current hitters.

You may not know this, but Lou gets a bonus for every "hold back". Every time he holds back a young player, he gets an additional $100,000. Between Cedeno, Hill, Marshall, and Pie, thats an easy $400,000.

oh i don't know. .391 OBP? 117 OPS+? ability to play many positions, including middle infield? those might be some explanations.

As I said before, different situations for different management. No, I wouldn't bunt with Lee or Ramirez. Would I for Theriot in the right sitation (to get Lee, Ramirez and Fukudome possibly runners in scoring position when playing for 1 run to extend a possible weather delay) - yes?

Theriot sucks, he still can't hit, sample size....."yeah, tha'ts a guy you want bunting." So, now he's good then? Which one is it?
