good for him. i wish more players would

Its nice and all, but unless they are auctioned for charity it doesn't really mean much.

Awareness?

As if some people don't know that breast cancer exists?

You think if more players wore pink shoes that suddenly more people would be aware of breast cancer? Yikes.

Awareness for organizations that raise funds for breast cancer treatments and research?

I'm watching the Mets/Reds game and the Reds announcers said Griffey would auction off his pink bat after the game.

Z may be doing the same thing with the shoes and batting gloves.

You're looking it at too simplistically. Awareness isn't just about knowing something exists. It's also about having it top of mind. When these guys use the pink bats, etc., it generates discussion by the announcers, the folks doing the highlights, etc. That discussion makes the issue top of mind for the viewer. That, in turn, can lead to the viewer donating money/time (finding a BC charity isn't hard). It can also remind the viewer to get a mammogram and take other preventative measures. Or, if it is a male watching, it can prompt him to discuss that stuff with his wife/gf/daughter/sister/whoever.

In relation to all the other diseases, doesn't breast cancern research receive the most awareness and fund raising in relation to how widespread the disease? While it's certainly a noble cause, it's kind of the easy way out - just wearing pink clothes.

The whole notion of a day of pink around Major League Baseball depended again on everyone -- Hillerich & Bradsby to make the special pink bats, hitters to swing the bats, all players to wear the pink trimming, fans to enjoy those Pink Zones around the ballparks, MLB Charities kicking in $50,000 to Komen through the "Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer" program. And the nice part is that the focus doesn't end when Sunday melts into Monday, because there again will be a "rolling auction" in which most of that game-used pink stuff is being signed and gradually will appear at the MLB.com Auction over coming days and weeks.

All of those proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, another reason that the bidding again will be a raging battle for many of those items. In fact, there is still time left to jump into the bidding for pink bats autographed ahead of time by Yankees stars Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.

Fans also can purchase their own personalized "Mother's Day 2008" pink bats right now for $79 apiece at the MLB.com Shop, with $10 from the sale of each one going to Komen. It is all part of a giant concerted effort in which everyone who plays or watches the game is involved, and you just can't say that about every day of the season.

I never said it was the best way to help combat breast cancer. I'm just saying something as little as pro athletes wearing pink shoes can make a difference, even if there's no subsequent charity auction (which apparently there will be.)
