A friend of my father's asked him this question. My father's vote made the results 9-9 which seems absurd to me.

So I ask you the same question. Yes or no. No questions or explanations before you vote.

Do you mean will he die? Will he be impeached? Will he resign?

That's one of those questions where you wonder to yourself or inner circle but dare not ask in a public forum.

I assumed the question spoke for itself. In other words, will he be president for the entire term or will something, anything, prevent that from happening. It can be morbid, but it's not absurd. World leaders not lasting their entire term can happen. And more than one US president has failed to fill out his term.

I agree its not absurd. But why isn't there a poll asking if John McCain would make it all 4 years? He's not black (and I'm assuming this was the impetus for the discussion) , but he's pretty damn old.

I don't think you really needed to ask the question. A first-time black president is unique. An old guy is not. Plus, if Barack gets the nomination, he's also most likely to win. Obama has some Kennedy/MLK qualities to him, and we all know those histories. It's a legit issue.

True, but McCain will be the oldest first time president if elected.

I'm the only one who said I doubt he'll make it. While a president's security is tighter than ever and much more difficult for an attempt on his life, given the hatred nature of this society, I would be surprised if there wasn't attempts at his life.

The demographic of society that would hate a black president enough to make an attempt on his life is typically the same extremist segments that would want to take out pretty much any president we've had for the last 40 years if they could.

Dubya broke the "president elected for first time in a year ending in 0 will get shot" streak right?
Actually, Reagan had already broken the streak (the streak related to dying while in office, not getting shot).

So far.

The streak was actually "President Elected in the year ending in 0 dies."

1840: Harrison - Died from Pneumonia only a month after elected.

1860: Lincoln

1880: Garfield

1900: McKinley

1920: Harding - Stroke (Apparently)

1940: Roosevelt

1960: Kennedy

1980: Reagan - survived, apparently broke the streak

2000: Bush - still has a few months?

have there been many attempts on his life so far? seems to me if someone was so against the idea of a black president, they'd take care of it before he was elected

I'm sure there's been multiple attempts on his (and Hillary's) life already. They just get stopped way before its even worth hearing about.

I think the VP's are going to be more important this year than they have in a long long time. Both of these guys and even Hillary if she won by some miracle have a chance of something happening to them in the next 4 years.
