At this point, I'm concerned that Lou has lost all patience for Hill and simply won't let him work through his struggles. Granted, Lou has shown a lot more patience for Marquis and Lilly this season. Unfortunately, that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Frankly, the best route at this point is to send Hill down and call up Gallagher. I'd like to see Marshall moved to the rotation, don't get me wrong, but he's the only left handed option the team has in the bullpen at the moment. Something tells me Piniella would never go without a LHP in there. Once Eyre comes back, I can see Marshall being sent down to stretch out.

....when Ted Lilly was busy giving up 5 runs a game and not taking any heat for it...

2.7 runs per game. not 5.

/pet peeve

Apr 7th - 3.2 IP 5ER

Apr 12th - 4.1 IP 5ER

Apr 17th - 6 IP 5ER

He's been good of late, but when he had 3 consecutive starts giving up 5 runs and looking like the worst pitcher on our staff, no one gave him any crap about it. That's what I meant by "was", that three game stretch of nonsense (4 game nonsense if you count his 4ER opener)

you're really gonna throw that "1" out there? Like they say, you can find numbers that'll prove anything you want.

We can argue all day whether or not he should have stayed in or not, but to try and make the case that Hill isn't having that bad of a year . . . and use last night's lone ER as proof, is not remotely productive. We might as well compliment him on his spectacular 1.5 K/IP from last night

I threw it out there because he got pulled after walking in a run, even though Lou felt like he gave up a 10-run solo home run. I also stated...

Perhaps he would've given up more tonight, maybe not, either way..............

So it was a hypothetical. They could've left him in and saw what happened, let him get out of the trouble. But they pulled him and left 8.1 innings of the game up to the bullpen? That's dumb. The Cubs have the bats to put up a few runs and make a comeback if he gave up a couple more, this wasn't the 8th inning or anything. It was a stupid move. Regardless of all that, take the 1ER from last night away and then look at his numbers. They're still not bad. I understand he's got control problems right now, and he needs to work on that, but he's also not giving up that many runs either, but you would think the Cubs are looking at him like he's the antichrist

I don't mind that he's sent down, I would've kept Gallagher down though (despite his wishes of being on the 25 regardless of role I assume) and brought up Ascanio or Cotts and used Marshall in long-relief.

It's much better for Hill to work on his issues there and Listach won't have the quick finger like Lou.

i agree...i have no idea why marshall isn't our long man...well actually i do...we HAVE to have a LOOGY!!!!

whatever...all in all not terrible...but i would much rather have gallagher still down in AAA and ascanio up here now

count me in on the "hill to the minors" idea. it's obvious that lou won't give him the proper chance to work out his problems with the major league club, so it's best that he go somewhere that he can take the ball every five days and be allowed to get his mechanics straightened out.

good luck with a playoff rotation of z, lilly, dempster and lieber, cubs!

Let's get to the playoffs first.

ERA doesn't mean anything.

Huh? ERA doesn't mean anything? You must be thinking of wins. I would absolutely beg to disagree. Is it a perfect statistic? No. Does it tell you everything you should want to know about a pitcher? No. But is it worthless? Absolutely not. It is one of the better statistics available to judge pitchers, esp when considered with WHIP, k/9, and k/bb. If you think it doesn't mean anything, find me a pitcher over the last 20 years who did not have a good year but had an ERA under 2.50. Or find me a pitcher who had an ERA over 5.00 for an entire season that we should consider as having had a good season.

how many options does he have left?

Looks like this is his last option year. Then again it's hard to discern from game logs, because those 32 days in between appearances very well could have been Dusty using him as the 12th man.

the cubs are 10 games better than any team in this division, especially with gallardo done and mil's bullpen in shambles. if they somehow manage to not win the division it will be because lee, ramirez and fukudome all got polio.

their rotation is good enough to win the central, but i wouldn't feel good about it in the playoffs.

We definitely need someone else to step up. If Marshall gets back in the rotation, it wouldn't surprise me to see him take the next step this year. He's still only what, 24 or 25?
