Most fans would use some variation of wins and losses/playoff appearances/world series titles as the yardstick. The Marlins don't measure up too well on that scale, even after having won the WS in each of their two playoff seasons.

In the last 15 years, Loria has more World Series titles than any other owner besides Steinbrenner.

Wrong.

Loria has owned the Marlins since 2002. Prior to that, he owned the Expos for 2 years, in 2000 and 2001.

So in 8 years of owning MLB teams, Loria sports a 620-676 record, 1 playoff appearance, and 1 WS title. Not a very difficult resume to top at all.

Yeah, just ask Larry Lucchino and John Henry.

Right, kind of. D. Wayne Huizinga (sp?) won the first title. I don't think Loria was offered the franchise to undermine it, I think the owners like him. They don't care because MLB is a private club and he's one of the more popular members (regardless of what RedIvyCub thinks she/he knows).

You are way off base. Loria is far from popular in the "good old boys" network.

Hill is already significantly better than Johnson at this point. I'm not very familiar with the Kidd trade, but I have a hard time believing it would be as bad as Hill and prospects for Johnson.

The Mavs trade was essentially Devin Harris and two #1 picks for Kidd.

The eight-player deal, in the making since before the All-Star break and talked about a lot longer than that, sends Kidd, forward Malik Allen and guard Antoine Wright to Dallas.

The primary piece headed to New Jersey is point guard Devin Harris. The others are center DeSagana Diop, swingman Maurice Ager, forward Trenton Hassell and retired forward Keith Van Horn. New Jersey also gets two first-round draft picks and $3 million.

Cuban, who was a Mavericks season ticket holder the last time Kidd was in Dallas, is essentially gambling that the 1½ seasons he’ll have Kidd is worth more than the 4½ seasons left with Harris running the offense.

Kidd, of course, is a proven commodity, but he turns 35 next month and is a decade older than Harris.

It was a high-risk, "win now" deal that so far has turned out very poorly for Dallas, and leaves them with 1 more year of a former allstar (Kidd) instead of 4 years of a possible future allstar (Harris), plus the draft picks.

Find some other names to plug into a Cubs scenario if you don't like Hill and prospects for Randy Johnson. Maybe the same deal for, say, the 2004 or 2005 vintage Randy Johnson works better. At that time Johnson was still pitching at an elite level, but was clearly on the downside. That's basically Kidd now.

Devin Harris and 2 #1 picks...that is pretty bad. Your scenario with 2004 Randy Johnson seems like a pretty decent comparison

he has to be somewhat popular, otherwise why would the owners sit back and watch him completely destroy two baseball franchises?

In 2003, they beat the uberexpensive Yankees in the series with a small-market payroll. He gave all of the other cheapass owners out there an alibi. I think they like him.

By "alibi" do you mean something else?

No, I mean alibi. They can now say "we're not loosing because we won't open up our wallets. Look at the Marlins, they're proof!" whenever the fans get restless because the teams won't open up the bank.

I know what I know. As I said, they were planning on contraction and the Expos were one of the teams until Henry sold to Loria...then the plan was for the Marlins to be contracted along with the Twins because Pohlad was willing to give up the franchise. Contracting the team Loria owned was the way to get rid of him. They don't like him. He is not respected.

May want to update the title of the thread:

The Cubs and Wrigley Field packaged together could sell for $1 billion, based on recent sales of professional teams. Major League Baseball has approved prospective buyers, which include a partnership headed by John Canning Jr., chairman of Madison Dearborn Partners LLC, and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

This would seem to be one huge step for Cuban. Does anyone know whether this "approval" indicates that Cuban will no longer have to worry about getting a majority of the owners to let him in?

I believe all it means is they are approved to look at the books. MLB itself does that. The owners themselves vote yes or no once Zell decides which offer he wants to take.

It would seem right now the trade was awful but it is long from over. The PG runs the team's offense and changing PG midseason isn't easy. Let's see if they figure some things out and gel over the offseason. If they do that the trade won't look so bad and if they make a run int he playoffs next year it would at least be a wash trade.

Plus Harris is a bit overrated. Is he a good PG? Yes but he is far from all-star. Especially with all the Deron/Paul's emerging and Rose coming in. He is 24 which isn't exactly extremely young anymore and has played five seasons now. His career high was this season with like 15 pts and 6 assts. Not exactly eye popping stats just good.

Canning's group includes ex-Cubs chairman Andrew McKenna, David Donnini, Craig Duchossois, Michael Ferro, Edward Kaplan, Michael Krasny, Larry Levy, Richard Melman, Patrick Ryan and Michael Sacks. There are more, all with strong Chicago ties.

Probably a dumb question, but is Edward Kaplan any relation to David Kaplan of Tribune Live and Sports Central on 720?

Canning used to run Madison Dearborn, he's from Chicago, but owns a piece of the Brewers and is good pals with Seligdorf.

Ok...that makes me feel a little more uncomfortable.

Jon...the rest of the group is from Chicago too, eh? Have any of these guys owned another team and is the Kaplan related to Gabe so a sweathogs reunion could be in the works?

I don't believe so. Kaplan has ties to IIT, U of C, and Northwestern. I can't say I know anything about the other guys except for Krasny, who founded CDW, and Pat Ryan, who is the chair of the board of trustees at Northwestern, is out biggest fundraiser, founded Aon, and is also heading up the Chicago 2016 campaign. Canning is the vice-chair on the board of trustees at Northwestern and a member of the board of trustees for a ridiculous number of other organizations and companies.

I don't envision that group shaking up the front office and changing this organization's philosophy.
