I have heard rumors that if the Astros get too far behind, Oswalt will want to go to a winning team and would wave his no-trade clause. They would want three young pitchers in return. Would they even think of trading Oswalt in the division? What would the Cubs have to give up?

Neal Cotts, Mark Holiman, and Edwardo Campusano. Done, done, and done.

A healthy Oswalt would be nice to have. I'm pretty sure it would cost Gallagher, Marshall, and one other pitcher.

Petrick? If so, I would make that trade in a heartbeat. Getting a guy who has 1 or 1a stuff would have to make the Cubs World Series favorites.

I'm guessing the third pitcher the Astros would ask for would be Rich Hill.

I'd still do it

Perhaps, but if the Cubs have to eat a majority of the contract, then it's a must the Cubs get a Ceda like prospect with Oswalt. Gallagher/Marshall and Hill is worth more to the Cubs then Roy Oswalt.

If the Cubs are built to win now, then no, they aren't.

Don't get your hopes up.

Our good friend Peter Gammons reported this week that Roy Oswalt would be willing to waive his no-trade clause this summer if the Astros continue to slide. But the big question here -- as with any potential Astros deal -- isn't whether the Astros want to trade him. It's whether owner Drayton McLane would sign off on it even if they did.

And don't bet your copy of "The Life and Times of Jim Deshaies" on that.

"Drayton is so locked into that guy, I don't think he'd even fathom it," said an executive of one team who speaks frequently with the Astros hierarchy. "It's something I think the baseball people might consider, if they got the right pieces back. But the owner really loves this guy."

McLane did approve a potential 2006 deal at the trade deadline that would have sent Oswalt to the Orioles (who then would have flipped him to the Mets). But that was before the Astros knew that Oswalt was willing to sign a five-year extension to stick around. Now that Oswalt is signed through 2011, McLane seems likely to have an entirely different take.

But do you HONESTLY think Houston would trade Oswalt to the Cubs?

I realize teams needs to stop looking at trade within their division as taboo, and start thinking it about your rival helping you LATER. Now, I would trade all three of Hill/Marshall/Gallagher. Hill or Marshall would have to be taken out of the deal, and replace with perhaps two decent prospects (Colvin and.......).

any team will trade any player to any other team for the right price

Yep. I'd want Marmol, Hill, Gallagher and another prospect if I were the Stro's.

Honestly, I don't think the Astros will trade Oswalt for anyone. However, he has already said that he wants to retire at the end of this contract (2011) and the Astros will not win anything this year or next, and an Oswalt trade (along with a Berkman trade) could net them a great young group of players.

Honestly, for Oswalt and Berkman, I'd give them Patterson, Colvin, Marmol, Hill, Murton, AND Gallagher.

Z, Oswalt, Lilly, Dempster, and Marquis would be solid.

Soriano, Fukudome, Lee, Berkman, ARam, Derosa, Soto, Cedeno? Yeah, that would absolutely rock.

I think the real question is this: Is Oswalt's perceived value equal to his actual value? I don't think he is the ace that people seem to think he is. He is good no doubt, but is he better enough than Hill to give up a lot of our younger cheaper guys?

Marmols out of the question. I dont care whose on the table.

Anyway, I highly doubt that they would trade him, much less within the division, and the Yankees and Red Sox would end up battling it out.

I'm sure the Cubs think so but if I'm going to trade my ace I want a lot of very good talent. Look what the Marlins got for Beckett.

What?!? Why? That's absurd.

Ridiculous. He's a reliever. Relievers should always be considered as part of a trade that upgrades the starting rotation or the lineup. If this Oswat talk wasn't bunk and the Astros wanted Marmol as part of the deal, you damn well add in Marmol.

marmol was 4th in VORP among cub pitchers last season and is second this season. He had a 34.5 VORP last season; rich hill had a 40.5 VORP and Carlos Zambrano had a 43.5 VORP. You can't just throw every relief pitcher in the bin together with the rationale that they're not worth that much. the difference between Marmol and Dempster in VORP last year, throwing roughly the same number of innings, was 26 points; the difference between Wuertz and Marmol was 17 points. The difference between, say, Khalil Greene and Ryan Theriot was 16 points of VORP.

I guess my point is, if you trade away an outstanding reliever to upgrade at another position, you might not really be upgrading your team like you think you are.

I watched two of Oswalt's performances this season and it's clear he's a shadow of his former self. Think of Pedro without the movement on his pitches. If I were Houston I'd be more than willing to move him and his bloated contract to some sucker.
