This is kind of an interesting article. The Cubs wouldn't have definitively gone after him, but I find it odd that Santana apparently never knew we were interested because the Twins never told him.

"I was open to anything," says Santana, who was traded to the Mets in February. "My mind-set was if they're going to trade me, that they trade me to a team willing to do whatever it takes to win it all. It looks like they're trying to win it all here (in Chicago). That's what I was looking for."

Andy, from all the quotes I've read, inluding what Hendry had to say was that Santana always wanted to go to the Mets and he made it known to the Twins. I don't think the Cubs had a chance.

Sam Fuld equals Carlos Gomez.

Sean Marshall equals Philip Humber

Jose Ceda equals Deolis Guerra

Billy Petrick equals Kevin Mulvey

Now that Johan has incensed the Mets organization, think they'll take that offer? :D

Gomez, Guerra, and Mulvey are all better prospects than the ones you listed for the Cubs. In Gomez and Mulvey's cases much better. (And I don't even like Gomez much) Marshall is better than Humber though.

A similar deal is probably something like Pie, Gallagher, Ceda, and Petrick.

Which I would have done in two seconds.

Hill, Soriano, Wuertz and Colvin for Santana. They can have all those guys for less than they're paying Santana. Wuertz solves their set up problem. Hill is a nice addition to their rotation and Soriano replaces the aged Moises Alou in LF. They bat him 5th after Beltran and their lineup looks like:

Reyes

Castillo

Wright

Beltran

Soriano

Delgado

Church

Catcher- is it Snyder?

P

That looks pretty good to me

I remember hhim saying he wanted on an east coast team and that had their spring training in Florida..Our rotation would be filthy with him in there..I think we'd be a lock for the World Series with him in the rotation

No he doesn't.

Maybe, but probably not.

No, he doesn't, and I'm not sure it's even close.

Maybe, but again, probably not.

I just find that comment interesting from the standpoint of Santana saying "it looks like they're trying to win it all here."

That's a pretty solid compliment.

Or......"If they're stupid enough to pay Soriano that much cash imagine how much they'd give me."

Even tho, I doubt the Cubs could have match the Mets offer, I do believe the Twins did a disservice to Johan and to their organization, by not considering what the Cubs could have, would have offered for Johan.

I know, Johan had wanted to be on the East Coast, but I doubt he would have turned down the opportunity to pitch in the 2nd (or 3rd biggest market) in baseball, especially knowing he would be teaming up with Carlos Zambrano. If that would have happen, then all the Cubs would have asked for from Lilly/Hill/Dempster/Marquis (whoever made the rotation) to pitch league average at their spot of the rotation.

It played out, like it did, and the Cubs could realistically still have enough bullets, to land a pitcher at the deadline (Blanton or Burnett).
