Lord, people look like idiots with those headbands on anyway. I can't imagine why you'd buy them even if you don't think they're offensive.

I want to add another "+1" to this one.

Agreed. The sooner everybody just views him as a baseball player and not a Japanese baseball player, the better.

It would help if analysts would quit w/ the ridiculous comparisons to ONLY other Japanese players... Not saying it doesn't happen to other races, but man, people wonder why race relations are still an issue....well, at least those people who'll even acknowledge issues remain. And you're right, people wearing that stuff look like total tools, but lack the sense & self-awareness to recognize it.

I still don't understand peoples' frustration and confusion over these comparisons. There are differences between American and Japanese baseball styles. It's not a coincidence that Fukudome's stance/follow-through has some similarities to Ichiro's. Frankly, it's interesting to see Japanese stars coming over and seeing what they "translate" into, in american baseball results.

Seeing the "Horry Kow" shirts, the lame hachimaki headbands, and now the sugegasa cone hats all over the stands really shows just how moronic many Cubs fans can be ... does no one actually realize that these things are - if not racist - at minimum in really, really poor taste? And supremely cheesy.

I keep hoping these things fade out quickly, especially with the Cubs playing so well and the national spotlight growing.

No dude, you just don't get it. We're honoring him. Like the Chief at U of I. Damn PC culture. Can't we honor people anymore?

the hats are also not japanese. i believe they are from the southeast asian mainland.

i lived in seattle when ichiro broke into the league, and there are actually japanese people that live there, so it was more of a hello kitty chirp-fest. gigantic groups of people all holding up cartoon signs and chanting "ichiro, ichiro, i-chi-rohhhhhhhhhhhh!" in a castrati-like pitch.

The Martians demand that people stop using sarcastic green because they think it's making fun of them.

Incorrect. (although they are also worn in SE Asia)

I still don't understand how this isn't racist:

or how our nation's capitol has a team called the Redskins

I agree. I don't see how it is any different than having a team called the "Darkies".

i like how all the papers reported this story and then acted like the problem was solved even though there are still people EVERYWHERE outside the stadium selling these shirts.

Not surprisingly, the Horry Kow shirts all over the place in the malls here. I know Pro Image seems to have a big stock of them.
