It's offensive to him, and no matter what anyone thinks, the cubs need to come down hard on this. Can you ban a shirt from Wrigley like they do at Great America and in schools? I wouldn't see why not.

They certainly can. It's private property so they can ban whatever the heck they want. I'm interested to see if we're told anything about it in the upcoming games.

Well, i sure hope they do ban that shirt then...and the headband for that matter that says the same thing. I guess you turn people away or make them cover it up, not sure what other sites do to prevent people from wearing it. Also, i guess its an ejection if you have it on in the game.

the headbands look ridiculous, and it's even worse when some idiots are wearing them in the 1st row right behind home and doing drunken karate moves. clearly Wrigley needs more snipers

I thought the headbands were funny, but I didn't nkow they said the "horry kow" thing on it...I almost bought one yesterday. I don't think they all have that on them, the one i looked at didn't have it. I remember why wife asking me, "do you think he thinks that's offensive" to the headbands, its a good question I suppose. I didn't know the answer, but if some american was playing in japan and everyone had cowboy hats on or something, would you be offended?

So what's the general consensus on the headbands as a whole? I think they are patronizing and tacky, but are they "racist"?

Well, i'll tell you one thing, there are a ton of people wearing them at the game on sunday. My first impression of the headband wasn't a bad thing at all, i thought it was a funny little "tribute" , for lack of a better term, to our new favorite cub. Although, i don't consider myself part of the PC police at all, the shirt was a no-doubt "red flag" when i saw it, and it disapointed me. Racial comments do not equal a "Cardinals Suck" shirt any any way, not even close.

I doubt there is a consensus, but I think they are incredibly stupid and reflect poorly on Cubs fans in general and the people who wear them in particular. They aren't inherently racist. But the words or designs on them may be.

I don't think most people really understand all the rising sun stuff either and the offensiveness of that to some people. Some people view that as tantamount to a swastika. However, I guess the difference between those two is that the Japanese Defense Forces still use the rising sun flag.

As offensive as the shirts are, I think banning any article of clothing that doesn't jeopardize the safety of patrons from Wrigley would be a terrible precedent to set.

I don't see the big deal. It's not some kind of free speech issue. If the Cubs don't like them they should ban them. It's their stadium.

I'm not sure if we would even be setting a precedence for banning shirts. I'm pretty sure that other stadiums have banned "Yankees sucks" t-shirts and other things like this in the past.

I'd imagine that a fan with profanity on their t-shirt would be forced to turn it inside-out in most stadiums. I don't see why they couldn't just do that with these t-shirts.

I have seen several fans be forced to turn shirts inside out that had curse words on them. Even the "Cubs Suck" shirts.

EDIT: AT BUSCH I HAVE SEEN THIS

While stereotypes are not healthy, I'm having a hard time seeing why this shirt is being blown up the way it is. Maybe I don't view it the same as everyone else, but I see the shirt in more of a celebration of a new player way and not really making fun of a stereotype. I dont see the shirt as saying "Those stupid slant eyed Japanese people can't even say holy cow right"! That said, if Fukudome and other Asian people find the shirt offensive then I'm all for banning it. Just ban it and move on. Theres no need blowing up over something that was made without malice intent.

Did you really post this?

yep!

NVM....not worth the effort

Everyone wants something Fukudome right now and people buy these shirts to SUPPORT him. Intent is everything. If Fukudome finds them offensive, then they should be banned and anyone who had the proper intent in buying them should be respectful enough not to wear them. I dont see the problem.

How about this shirt I just found on Ebay?

An update:

Trib[/url]"]The T-shirts were supposed to be an attempt to poke fun at Japanese pronunciation of the English language, using Kosuke Fukudome's popularity on the North Side as a hook. The Cubs were able to get vendors who sell Major League Baseball merchandise around the park to stop selling the offensive T-shirts and a team spokesman said the company that manufactured the shirts has agreed to stop making them.

But apparently a large number of the shirts still exist, and the T-shirt ban hasn't stopped individuals with city licenses from selling them. A few vendors were selling them outside of Wrigley before Thursday's game.

........

Cubs spokesman Peter Chase said the team is working with the city to crack down on the sellers but said they can not police every corner every game.

Lord, people look like idiots with those headbands on anyway. I can't imagine why you'd buy them even if you don't think they're offensive.

Agreed. The sooner everybody just views him as a baseball player and not a Japanese baseball player, the better.
