The St. Petersburg Times reports that the Rays have signed Evan Longoria to a long-term deal.

It only took six games and 20 at-bats. The team is expected to announce the signing at a 1 p.m. press conference. Longoria wasn't eligible for free agency until 2014, and the contract likely takes him through then with a club option on his first year or two of free agency. He projects to be one of the league's better third basemen, and the deal should protect the Rays against rapidly inflating salaries come arbitration time.

That was quick.

Rays will make a run in the near future.

my guess is next year

And will probably help towards only one AL East team making the playoffs this year.

80-85 wins this season would not surprise me one bit

nope...next season will be nasty for them though as long as health is good...

neimann?

that is a gross gross gross rotation

if they could just land another outfielder they would be really intimidating

Health is the single biggest concern.

Evan needs to fire his agent.

Why he still has to decide the deal and sign his name. It was this or a year to year deal. Now he has plenty of security and almost $20 million. He might not be as greedy as Prince Jr. If he lives up to the hype he will have more than enough money.

I disagree. He took security and up front money opposed to waiting and seeing what he could get later. Both parties are taking a risk. Evan could make a lot more money; the Rays could end up paying a lot of money to a prospect that doesn't pan out in the major leagues.

What risk are the Rays taking? Even if Logoria plays to his floor, his contract will still be next to nothing.

They are still guaranteeing him a lot of money that they don't have to pay him. If he turns into nothing, that's a lot of money paid to a guy who's on the bench or sent back to the minors or released. Longoria is truly leaving money on the table, potentially lots and lots of it if he plays to his ceiling, but it would be three years or more before he sees it. It's possible he'd rather have a fraction of it now.

Baldelli says hello :) TB is a low budget team so even paying a player 5mil a yr affects them. Anything can happen with a player so there definitely is risk involved for both parties.

Davis is prob. a better bet long-term than Neimann, of course there's still McGee (who would be the Cubs best prospect) and Hellickson as well.

I hope they lockup Kamzir and Crawford longterm as well.

I like this move for the Rays. It's kind of quick, but semi-knowing Longoria while he was here in Mongomery, it doesn't surprise me that he sign a long-term contract. And with players salaries going up, then is a flat bargain for the Rays. While there is a gamble with this kind of contract, it's a well-worth calcuated risk.

Not to mention by locking Longoria, the Rays eliminate the risk of having to sign some bottom feeder, crappy 3rd baseman to man the spot.

I know both Boston and New York fans won't admit it, but Tampa Bay is clearly the MOST talented team in the AL East, and it shouldn't surprise anybody if they knocked either BoSox or NYY out of the playoff hunt this yr.

Longoria's salary starts at $500,000 this season and maxes out at $11.5-million in his ninth season if the Rays pick up the option. The breakdown:

2008 - $500,000

2009 - $550,000

2010 - $950,000

2011 - $2-million

2012 - $4.5-million

2013 - $6-million

2014 - $7.5-million or $3-million buyout

2015 - $11-million or $1-million buyout of two-year option.

2016 - $11.5-million

Longoria will also donate up to $725,000 during the contract to the Rays Baseball Foundation.

But Hellickson won't be around by next season, would he? He's looked good so far this season in the FSL.

This could be their top 6 to start next season:

Kazmir

Shields

Garza

Price

McGee

Davis

Sick.
