I'm not a fan of this. I'd prefer we kept Marshall stretched out as a starter.

...and bring up a hitter.

With Ted Lilly and Jason Marquis in the rotation, Marshall will be extremely stretched out.

While I too think Sean Marshall will be more useful stretched out, what makes me angriest about this move is how the front office and Lou make such reactionary decisions. Yeah, I realize the guy sucked the other day, but largely nothing has changed since spring training. He is the exact same player. If you though he should have made the team then, then you should still feel that way.

Rather than an overreaction, it could just be Lou wanting an available fresh arm that he believes could pitch a few innings (in the event of a Dempster disaster). Even with the off day, the bullpen was used heavily in the extra-inning win.

Rotoworld, of course, has a great take.

Cubs recalled LHP Sean Marshall from Triple-A Iowa.

Marshall in relief was a bad idea in the spring and is a bad idea now, but the Cubs team that kept giving Sean Gallagher multiple chances to embarrass himself out of the pen last year was sure to stick him in the pen at some point. He'll be interesting in NL-only leagues once once he gets the rotation spot he's earned.

Cubs optioned LHP Carmen Pignatiello from Triple-A Iowa.

Pignatiello pitched two-thirds of an inning in a week and a half, and the Cubs were terribly let down that he struggled. He'll know better next time.

That's what Lou said on the pregame show. He referenced how often Marmol has pitched and that Marquis has the flu.

Which probably means that Marmol will have several appearances before Marshall gets into a game.

Unless you have a game where everybody plays! The way this one turned out that may have been the perfect roster move. However, the way management gets tunnel vision this could be the end for Pignatello.

Which makes this a versatile insurance move - bring up a guy that can start or go a few innings, whichever will turn out to be necessary.

The way these long extra innings games are going, we could see a lot of shuttling back and forth to Iowa this year.
