The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Adam Eaton may have pitched himself out of the No. 5 spot in the Phillies rotation.

Eaton allowed six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings on Thursday to raise his spring ERA to 7.41, and manager Charlie Manuel didn't exactly commit to using him. "I don't know... We'll see when we get there. We've got plenty of time. [Next] Saturday's a long way off. Hell, I might be dead by then," Manuel said. The Phillies could turn to Chad Durbin, who has a 5.25 ERA this spring, in his place.

I really wish we had just gotten Meche. And I wasn't all against the move when it was rumored, either. I actually liked his upside. I wasn't really excited about it, but I wanted it to happen.

I'm not remembering that one, what was it?

Hendry was rumored to be going after both Lilly and Meche at the same time last offseason. When he lost out on Meche, he went for Marquis (as I remember it).

Then there is this doozy from this morning's Wilmington News Journal from Eaton on yesterday's performance....

The way I feel and the way my stuff is, I'm pretty happy

i don't think it was that; i think it was either lilly or meche. remember, meche got a 5 year, $55M contract. marquis' contract - while ridiculous - is just 3 years, $21 million, a much smaller financial commitment.

eaton's contract, given that he's always been below average and has had a lot of injury problems, was inexcusable.

That's great. :)

You never know, he could die in a fight with a reporter. :D

I could be wrong, but I thought they were still going after Meche after signing Lilly. Then Meche ultimately chose the Royals over the Cubs.

What you're saying would make sense, though, since Lilly signed and then Meche signed with the Royals the next day.

Maybe Bruce could help us.

That offseason is one of those strange ones where Marquis's contract is not good, but it was one of the better pitching signings of the offseason.

I'd rather have Marquis's contract than Zito, Schmidt, Eaton, Padilla, Igawa, Mulder, and Woody Williams.

Suppan is a tossup. He got paid more money last year, put up worse basic production, and is signed for 1 more year than Marquis. However, he got hurt by the bad Brewers defense, and he's a likely candidate to be better than Marquis going forward.

We'll also see on Daisuke. He certainly wasn't special in year one, but he was pitching in a really tough division and it was his first year in the U.S. He'll have to improve significantly to be worth 6 years and over 100 million dollars though.

Lilly and Meche are the only 2 success stories out of all those pitchers so far (I'm throwing out Mussina and El Duque because they were never truly on the market). Miguel Batista would have been a little better than Marquis as well.

Teams were a lot more careful with pitching this year, although part of that was due to a weak crop. Only 2 pitchers got multi-year deals: Silva and Kuroda.

Yeah I was going to mention the Zito signing. Richest in history and the guy can't even pitch to Marquis' level. I think its karma for the Giants supporting Barry for so long \:D/

I have a feeling that Dice-K is going to regress, not improve -- like every other Japanese starter. MLB players have gotten a good enough look at him, imo.

I don't know I just think he will be very good this year. He has so many pitches he can throw.

To be fair, we don't them as young as Dice-K that often.

As far as the Marquis signing, I've thought that myself. I mean, those contracts are mostly hideous, Marquis's is just not very good.

I mean, I'm REALLY happy we avoided the train wrecks of Zito and Schmidt. Gotta give Hendry props for avoiding those pitfalls.

Schmidt is one guy I wanted Hendry to sign. I used to daydream the possible 1-2-3 of Big Z, Schmidt, and Hill.

Boy am i glad that didn't happen!

Yeah it reminds me of when I used to daydream of a 1-2-3 of Z-Prior-Wood. Still catch myself doing it too. We would be dominant with that rotation. ugh will probably bother me 30 years from now.

There was also this guy named Johan something.

I'm pretty sure he was talking only about free agents and Johan was not one.

He was traded from the Twins to the Mets and then inked the new deal. Unless I've gone completely crazy...
