If you're upset, talk to Lou or Hendry, not the press. Be a man and grow up.

There it is - "be a man." Maybe my favorite cliche of any on this Board. Seems the list of Cubs that aren't manly never stops growing.

Ugh.

I think he meant "be a man" in the "be an adult" sense, not "be a tough guy."

Yep. Communicate and have the guts to talk to your manager. Going through the press is like having your mommy or daddy solve your problems.

How can you be sure that he hasn't? Maybe he has and that's why answering a question when asked is not a big deal.

That's possible. I just get annoyed when they go through the press first instead of talking to the manager.

DeRosa doesn't seem like the type to vent to the press before talking to Lou. I'm sure he's had a discussion with him.

When DeRosa signed with the Cubs, Hendry stated that DeRosa was signed to be the starting second baseman -- no more utility guy.

Well, that was a lie.

You bet your butt I'd be PO'd if I were DeRosa. He's done everything expected of him and it appears they are not happy with him.

I highly doubt Jim promised he's be the starting second baseman for his entire contract. He said he'd be the starting 2B last season, which he was. Things change.

Anyways, I don't think anybody here is arguing that Derosa was wrong, they're just saying that he doesn't need to repeatedly be saying it. There's a difference between having the right to say something and actually saying it. This is what, the 5th time he's told the media about how he's unhappy with the situation? We get is Mark, you made your point. Suck it up.

He paid his dues and earned a three-year deal to be the starting second baseman for the Chicago Cubs. If he'd underperformed, he'd have nobody supporting him now. But he actually exceeded expectations and now they're going back on the deal. My guess is they wanted him as a supersub all along (primarily because of Ramirez) but the only way he'd sign is if they gave him the starting job. After a year, they're weaseling out and I won't blame him if he raises hell about it. Suck it up, Cubs.

He is an employee of the Cubs.

What is accomplished by going to the media? Can you tell me? With this team, if you speak out you're more likely to be shipped out than rewarded.

Maybe he's hoping that if they get Roberts the Cubs will ship him somewhere he can start.

It's been 100 years since the Cubs won a title. Please remember this. Yes he's done everything that expected of him, but if you want to win a championship, you have to make trades that better your team. Roberts makes the Cubs a better team. If DeRosa's feelings get hurt in route to a Cubs' championship I don't really care. Plus ARam might get hurt, Soriano might get hurt and so forth. He will get his chances. Plus, DeRosa has not been the most consistent player around. His lat two years were good, but it isn't like he had has 5-7 great years. Roberts has been more consistent.

I'm not making an argument for or against anyone.

I'm saying that I'd be pissed if I were DeRosa.

If I were running the club, I'd much rather have a guy who's doing wht DeRosa is doing rather than have him say "aw shucks. I hope we get Roberts because he's better than me and will help us win."

DeRosa believes in himself. He's on the team. Roberts is not.

I just understand his frustration and think it's 100% merited.

No, you're blaming him for not keeping his mouth shut about it. He seems like a professional, and if a trade happens I doubt he'll throw a tantrum. But letting everyone know that he's not going to be happy about it could factor into their decision, especially considering how long the talks have dragged on. I think a lot of fans decided long ago that a marginal upgrade at a position they're set at isn't worth the trouble or the prospects. Hopefully the Cubs agree, soon.

Considering the statements hendyr made at the convention (not specifically about the Roberts/Derosa thing) I doubt it. I can't find a quote, but he basically said that the day he lets a player's feelings or opinions affect what he does as GM is the day he should quit. If anything, I think i would make Jim want to get Roberts and then ship Derosa off to another team. That seems to be the standard operating procedure for players who speak out in the Hendry era.

Heard this: If the Cubs finish their deal for Brian Roberts, or trade for Felipe Lopez, Mark DeRosa will want an opportunity to compete for the everyday job at shortstop.

The leadoff spot is a need on this team.

Wrong

Why don't you think so? Even DeRosa admits it.

It's not a position

Neither is cleanup hitter, what's your point?

Hopefully if a trade were to happen, Lou would want to appease DeRosa enough to at least give him a chance

Another interesting thing about this is that it implies that Lopez would play 2B for the Cubs not SS as some thought.

I'm sure speed would be a reason cited for why Derosa's chance falls short.

If only there were meaningless exhibition games in which Lou could see how DeRosa would look right now at shortstop.

He's supposed to have super-sub capability after all, right?
