"I'm getting a little concerned about a couple of our guys," Piniella said. "Look, we don't have much longer. I'm going to have to start getting them in there a little more often. Forget these days off."

Link.

Sounds pretty stupid.

In 10 days he'll be talking about how the guys are ready to go and that spring training is too long.

What the heck is wrong with Lou? Throwing the regulars out there everyday. Caring about wins and losses. Gonna play the regulars 9 innings and extend the starters like a normal game and wonder why his team is burnt out come June.

Fine by me, to be honest, I am concerned as well. I could care less about W/L in ST, but I do want to see this team hit!

More at bats in the Spring is not a bad thing. It certainly can't hurt guys who have already/will miss some time like DeRosa, Soriano, Ramirez and Pie. We already know who will be in the every day lineup and most of the bench anyway.

Let the regulars get their at bats.

Yes, it certainly could.

Yes, it certainly could.

How so exactly? By over-extending themselves in those 3-4 at bats in a Spring Training game?

If the regulars are healthy, which all but Pie seem to be, play them and get them regular at bats now. That is what Spring Training is for - especially those who have missed time.

when people are recovering from injuries, you don't throw them back into everything at full speed, everyday. i messed up my shoulder and when i was done rehabbing it, i didn't just jump in the pool and start doing 4-5 miles a day. that's a good way to get yourself hurt again.

Lets restrain ourselves from overreacting here, like Lou may be doing himself. I saw this coming when he was being interviewed by Len & Bob when he mentioned he didn't have a couple weeks worth of time maybe a couple days. Hes not gonna push those with injury issues to the brink of reinjury, hes just a stressed out manager right now. I believe its a little easier with us sitting at home typing on a message board compared to the man who is supposed to lead the Cubs to a championship. Hes gonna push the regulars a little more than they should be and I'm sure he will back off, I haven't seem him do anything crazy enough to not trust him yet.

most guys are hitting fine, and some of the ones who aren't (lee) are going to hit. it's not a big deal.

Seriously. Aramis, Soriano, Pie, and Theriot are all over .300. Fukudome and Soto were at .300 when these statements were made. The probable bench players are killing the ball (Murton, Ward, Cintron, Fontenot). The only guys not hitting are Derrek Lee, the guy that needs worried about the least. And Mark Derosa who has 6 ABs after having his heart surgery.

Not that I really disagree with you guys, but didn't we say all last year how Derrek Lee was gonna get his power stroke going and we didn't need to worry about him, but then he never really did? I know, he was coming off an injury and all, but still....

Are you referencing Spring Training or during the season? I don't remember anybody complaining about the power during Spring Training, and then yes, most of the first half people were waiting for him to get the power stroke going. Your use of never is incorrect as his power returned in the second half of the year.

He didn't? He slugged .554 in the second half. I'd say he showed that he can still hit for power. Yes, it would be nice if he could do that for a full season, but it's not accurate to say he never got his power stroke back.

He hit 16 home runs and slugged .554 after the break. So, yeah, I'd say he got his power stroke going.

Hasn't anyone picked up on the fact that what Lou says and what Lou does are two very different things?

thanks for saying this

I guess there's no point in me commenting on the Lee never getting his power stroke back thing since like 5 other people have, but I was gonna.

This is just the usual ST talk. We really don't have a vocal leader on the field(Lee is too laid back) and I hate to have Lou do it from the dugout. But I do have a concerns about the 2nd/SS situation. These guys need to be the most co-ordinated players, like a qb and center, to turn double plays, etc.. When you have people out with injuries or are waiting for a trade to happen, you can't play the eventual starters. I don't believe you just plug guys in and they automatically function well together. Lou needs to play the regulars the last 10 ST days and have them feel comfortable with each other.
