The Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports that the Pirates have agreed to terms with Byung-Hyun Kim on a one-year contract.

It's said to be a major league deal and the Pirates are expected to use Kim out of the bullpen.

When I saw this, my brain read Hee Seop Choi.

Not to hijack, but what's up with that guy?

P.S. I like having BHK in the division.

Back in one of the leagues closer to home, IIRC.

Hee-Seop Choi (March 19, 1979 in Hwasun, South Korea) is a professional baseball player who has played in the MLB for the Chicago Cubs, Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers. He is a first baseman who bats and throws left-handed. Choi currently plays for the Kia Tigers in the South Korean KBO League.

That is according to his wiki page.

Pirates signed RHP Byung-Hyun Kim, who had been with the Marlins, to a one-year, $850,000 contract.

General manager Neal Huntington said the team’s interest in Kim is solely as a reliever. He'll battle for a setup role in front of Matt Capps.

I keep trying to find a reason for this, then I realize, he's probably better than most of the guys we have competing for spots in the 'Pen. Which is pretty pathetic.

Perhaps if he concentrates on relieving only, and doesn't worry about starting, he'll be a competent reliever. :beg:

You're looking too hard for a reason, Jake. It's quite obvious that Pittsburgh loves their underhanded relief specialists and have been missing the days of Kent Tekulve and Enrique Romo.

I thought they signed Shawn Michaels

I did too. I saw that as "HBK"

Same here.

I remember vividly sitting in the bleachers with other NSBBers on Memorial Day wondering how in hell the Cubs were being shut out by Byung-Hyun Kim!

don't forget about the fake rally in the 9th!

I was already looking forward to post-game drinking by then.

Kim on a minor league deal would have been a better gamble than Shinjo or how ever you spell Fukodome's spring training buddy.
