Corey Patterson 0/8 3k

The fact that he continues to receive regular playing time mystifies me.

It shouldn't.

Patterson is, after all, a veteran at this point

and as everyone who knows dusty should be well aware of, a veteran who has a proven track record of being lousy is better than a young hitter who might turn out to be good.

Corey has darker skin than Bruce, so, you know, he'll be able to hang better once the summer months really kick in. Plus, dude's a vet.

Any possible chance CPatt might have had in salvaging a career was dealt a crushing blow when he was put right back under the wing of the manager who presided over his demise in '04 and '05.

Jay Bruce just got called up. Looks like CPatt is done in Cincy. It's sad to see how far his career has gone off track. I hope he catches on somewhere else, but I really doubt it will be with a contender. He had to accept a minor league deal this spring and his stock has to be even lower now.

haha. the reds look like they're going to get rid of Hatteberg instead of Patterson.

The team was apparently unable to separate Dusty Baker and Corey Patterson.

for all the hand-wringing and bellyaching that was done by myself and others over corey patterson's development, or lack thereof, i've finally been able to make my piece with both he and dusty over the whole matter. dusty didn't ruin him, corey is what he is, at long last.

I mean, thats a lot of pitches for a young guy, but what's the manager going to do? If your starting pitcher can't get through 5 innings, your bullpen is going to be overused as well.

Obviously, Cueto is more valuable to their long term success than some middle reliever, but the kid has to cut down on his pitches. It's not like when he left Volquez in against us when they were up 9-0 in the 7th, which was completely moronic.

Dusty's whole pitching/use philosophy obviously sucks and that probably has a lot to do with why Cueto is throwing so many pitches, but not pulling a guy before the end of the 5th inning in those situations isn't really the worst thing.

If they have no hope of contending this year, and Cueto is part of your future, then you take him out at 100 pitches and overwork your bullpen. If Dusty overworks his pen, holes in the pen can be patched from FAs, trades, or call ups much easier than holes in the rotation.

In tonight's game, Jay Bruce was at the plate in the bottom of the 8th with the winning run on first and no outs. Bruce is 3/3 at that point with a double.

What does Dusty do?

Call for the bunt! :rotfl:

Naturally, given that Jay Bruce has had about 1,500 professional ABs in his career and has never once recorded a successful sacrifice bunt in those ABs, this turned out to be a rather horrific AB that ended with Bruce fouling out to 3B.
